Lionsgate will release “ The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard ” in North America, the studio announced Thursday at the American Film Market in Santa Monica, Calif., where Millennium Media is handling sales. The original movie was released in late summer of 2017 and grossed $75.5 million stateside and more than $180 million globally. In “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” Reynolds played the titular bodyguard hired to protect a notorious hitman, portrayed by Jackson. The film follows the mismatched duo on a journey from London to the International Court of Justice in the Netherlands in order for the hitman to testify against an Eastern European dictator, played by Gary Oldman. Thanks in no small part to Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds has a lot more clout these days, especially at Fox. He's parlaying that into a first-look film deal between his production company, Maximum Effort and the studio. The first title in his sights? The long-gestating new movie version of board game Clue . The mystery title where players must figure out the suspect, locale and murder weapon was adapted into a comedy in 1985 that starred Tim Curry and Madeline Kahn . Universal, under its deal with Hasbro's Allspark Pictures arm had been developing a new version for years, with no success. In 2016, the game company snatched the rights back and set up the Fox attempt. Now Reynolds will produce and potentially star in the movie, which makes us think the comic element will still be strong with this one. He's had both superhero success (launching Daredevil for Netflix) and disappointment (Sony's stymied Sinister Six), but Drew Goddard will be hoping for fairer winds when he handles X-Force , set to bring Ryan Reynolds ' Deadpool and Josh Brolin 's Cable back to our screens as writer and director for Fox. The all-too-familiarity of The Hitman's Bodyguard still makes for an enjoyable time. Review by Matt Cummings If the old adage can be believed that some old movies need a newer version to rekindle interest in the genre, then The Hitman's Bodyguard might be the best example we've seen this year.
