BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

The Curse Of La Llorona Lands On Top Of The Box Office

In addition to superheroes, horror has proven to be a powerful performer at the Stateside box office, its comparatively low budgets and wide appeal generating solid profits. The latest tale of terror to strike a chord with audiences is The Curse Of La Llorona , which earned a studio-estimated $26.5 million. Though co-produced by James Wan (with Michael Chaves in the director's chair), it's not directly linked to the Conjuring films, though it does have a connection in Tony Amendola's Father Perez, who also popped up in 2014's Annabelle. The story of a terrifying legend about a weeping woman that brings death and fear pushed last week's repeat champ Shazam! down to second, but Warner Bros./New Line won't be shedding tears as the studio and its genre arm released both films. Shazam! spent its third weekend in the charts earning $17.3 million, and crossed the $120 million mark at the domestic box office. Faith-based film Breakthrough – the first to be rel

Shazam! Wins The Box Office

In another win for the re-envisioned DC movie universe (albeit perhaps not on the level of Aquaman just yet), Shazam! arrived top of the Stateside box office charts. The light-hearted hero tale took in $53.4 million for the three-day weekend, according to studio estimates. Adding in the money from the previous weekend's preview screenings, the new Warner Bros./New Line release is at $56.7 million domestically, a healthy start for a film that cost less to make (around $100 million before marketing costs) than it's recent DC stablemate. Outside the US, the movie made $102 million, resulting in a worldwide total to date of $158.7 million. The biggest challenge ahead for the movie is how much it can in before a little film called Avengers: Endgame arrives to dominate. Also arriving (or should that be resurrecting?) in the charts was horror remake Pet Sematary , the Stephen King adaptation making $25 million for a solid second place start. Last week's champ, Dumbo , wa

Dumbo Barely Takes Flight

Many of the reviews for Disney's live-action/CG Dumbo goofed on how a film featuring a flying elephant failed to "soar". And, despite the movie opening in the top spot at the US box office, that can also be said for its performance. Tim Burton's latest took in $45 million, according to studio estimates. That's far from a great opening and below the Mouse House's expectations, yet with a day-and-date launch in many countries around the world, it saw its performance boosted to $116 million worldwide. Compared to the likes of Disney stablemate Captain Marvel , however, that's not a particularly impressive start. Now we'll have to see if Dumbo can hold on, but given the highly competitive marketplace for movies, that seems doubtful. Jordan Peele's Us fell to second place, but still added $33.6 million, crossing to $128.2 million in the States alone. Given that it was made for $20 million (before marketing costs), the horror pic's American p
