A small western film tries desperately to be an Oscar contender. Review by Erika Ashley In the late 1880s, a young boy watches a ruthless, God-fearing “Preacher” murder his father in a cold-blooded knife-duel. Years later the boy, David Kingston, grows up to be a Texas Ranger and is put on a special case when bodies of deceased Mexicans begin popping up in a river outside of a quiet town. The man that runs the town is the very man that killed Kingston’s father 22 years before. Kingston brings his wife along with him reluctantly to investigate the deaths but gets caught up quickly in the inner-workings of a much larger problem. Kingston soon finds himself in a duel, fighting for his wife and his life after he uncovers the truth. As someone who found the premise beind The Hunger Games to be barely agreeable, I have come to enjoy their play on the big screen, both as a zeitgeist meter and for the way it launched Actress Jennifer Lawrence's career. Along the way, I appreciated its gripping social commentary, as well as the violent and bloody conflict given to us in the form of gladitorial tributes. But with four films under its belt, the series feels as war-weary as its subject, no longer reflecting its namesake, and perhaps proving that YA-based movies might be truly dead. As the showdown between Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and President Snow (Donald Sutherland) approaches its zenith, the citizens of the various Districts band together to wage war against Panem's sadistic leader. Variety is reporting Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns has indicated that the studio is exploring developing prequels to its “ Hunger Games ” franchise. Burns made the disclosure Tuesday at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York, saying that the franchise “will live on and on.” But Burns gave no specific details as to what form that would take. The fourth film, “ The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2 ,” is trailing the other movies in the series at the same point of release, with $227 million at the U.S. box office after three weekends. International grosses have hit nearly $300 million. Burns noted that the first two films contained arenas — where the 74th and 75th versions of the Hunger Games competitions took place — while the second two did not, and said younger fans missed the arenas in the latter pics. “If we went backwards there obviously would be arenas,” he added.
