Avengers: #InfinityWar Takes Down Star Wars

“ Avengers: Infinity War ” officially smashed records for biggest box office opening ever. Though final domestic numbers won’t be confirmed until mid-Monday, its domestic total exceeded expectations for a North American launch of $258.2 million. Internationally, it secured $382.7 million for a global tally of $640.9 million. Initial projections on Sunday showed $250 million in North America, along with $380 million internationally. Those numbers easily secured Marvel’s latest title the biggest domestic and global debuts of all time. The previous domestic record-holder was “ Star Wars: The Force Awakens ,” which bowed with $248 million in 2015. “ Infinity War ” also topped “ The Fate of the Furious '” global opening record of $542 million. Disney and Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The Last Jedi delivered an early Christmas present for Hollywood and theater owners over the weekend with a near-record $220 million debut in North America, the second-best showing of all time behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Final numbers released Monday matched Sunday's estimate of $220 million. The Last Jedi opened a mere 11 percent behind The Force Awakens ' record-shattering domestic launch of $247.9 million on the same weekend in 2015, a rare feat in the age of sequelitis. Revenue for the weekend spiked more than 30 percent over the same weekend last year, helping to narrow the yearly gap from 4 percent to 3 percent. Star Wars: Episode IX Arrives May 24, 2019

Variety is reporting “ Star Wars: Episode IX ” is set to fly into theaters on May 24, 2019, Disney announced on Tuesday. Colin Trevorrow is on board to direct. Disney had staked out December for “ Star Wars: The Force Awakens ” and the upcoming “ Star Wars: The Last Jedi ,” but now returns to the summer, where every other previous installment had bowed. Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac are all expected to return. Disney recently revealed that Carrie Fisher, who died late last year, will not appear in the film. Earlier this month, Disney released the first trailer for “The Last Jedi,” which bows this December, at Disney’s “Star Wars Celebration” event. “The Force Awakens” and the recently released “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” crushed box office records, with both films surpassing $1 billion at the worldwide box office. John Boyega To Star In Pacific Rim 2

John Boyega has long since proved he knows something about battling odd creatures, be it in Attack The Block or a little film he appeared in last year called Star Wars: The Force Awakens . So he's got the credentials to fight Kaiju in the Pacific Rim sequel, and producer Guillermo del Toro has picked him to play the son of Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost.
