Sin City - A Dame to Kill For Review: Uninspired Overly-Sexualized Follow-up

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For knows what it wants, but utterly misses in its execution. The folly of returning to an old franchise nearly 10 years after it was made has proven to be difficult at best and disastrous at worst. Whether it's expectation or the passage of time, film series that see such lapses hardly ever work out. This year's 300: Rise of an Empire was engaging in its leads, but it failed to attract audiences who saw the original as their Holy Bible of Violence. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For only strengthens my theory that all series have a shelf life. Wrapping three stories of life in crime-ridden Sin City, we follow the further adventures of the bruiser Marv (Mickey Rourke), dancer Nancy (Jessica Alba), and anti-hero Dwight (Josh Brolin), as well as new ones by the gambler Johnny (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). Some want money, others respect, and a couple just want to wash away their demons. But the city always throws up obstacles like Senator Roark (Power

SIN CITY & HONG KONG COLLIDE IN A LIMITED-EDITION VINYL FIGURE OF Marv!

SIN CITY AND HONG KONG COLLIDE IN A LIMITED-EDITION VINYL FIGURE FROM FRANK MILLER AND ERIC SO! The masters of two mediums come together with an all-new, limited-edition vinyl figure of Sin City’s beloved brute, Marv! This unique interpretation of Marv was created by Eric So, a master of modern design and a leader in the Hong Kong designer-toy movement. With the guidance of Frank Miller , So has sculpted a thirteen-inch vinyl figure that is unlike any that has come before it. While best known for his groundbreaking toy designs, Eric So is also an accomplished designer in many other areas, such as men’s fashion and accessories. He is a legend in his native Hong Kong, and has made a name for himself worldwide. In the same spirit as his previous collaboration with Dark Horse (a vinyl figure of Mike Mignola’s Hellboy) or his Nike-commissioned statue of Michael Jordan, So favors a humorous and cartoonish approach over realism. While Marv is depicted in his customary trench coa

Mel Gibson Confirmed For The Expendables 3

Neither of these casting choices are shocks – Mel Gibson was reportedly in talks in June and Antonio Banderas’s named was dropped on Twitter by Expendables boss Sylvester Stallone – but official confirmation has come that both will join The Expendables 3 . The news comes on the heels of 'Willisgate', with Bruce no longer part of the third Expendables cast and Harrison Ford hired in his place. Gibson seems to be relishing the chance to play bad guys at the moment, with a showy villain role in Machete Kills and now this. Perhaps he’s trying to spin his decidedly murky reputation in Hollywood and make a comeback by playing up his dark side. We’re not sure that’ll work, but who knows? Whether Banderas will be on the side of good – represented by Stallone’s Barney Ross and the rest of the MVP OAP AWOL types, blended with some of their younger regulars and some new faces – or evil remains to be seen. As of now, the roster reads: Stallone, Ford, Gibson, Banderas, Jason Statha

Julia Garner Has Joined Sin City 2

Julia Garner has joined the cast of Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For , which is now filming in Austin at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios. Garner, an up-and-comer whose credits include Martha Marcy May Marlene and The Perks Of Being A Wallflower , will play a young stripper opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Johnny in the follow-up to 2005′s Sin City, adapted from Miller’s own graphic novel series.1 Also onboard for Dimension Films’ October 4, 2013 release are Josh Brolin, Ray Liotta, Jeremy Piven, Dennis Haysbert, and Juno Temple, while Sin City vets Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Michael Madsen, Rosario Dawson, Jamie King, and Clive Owen are returning. Garner made her feature debut in Sean Durkin’s Martha Marcy May Marlene and nabbed roles last year in Wallflower and Not Fade Away. She recently hit Park City with Jim Mickle's cannibal pic We Are What We Are, bought by eOne out of Sundance last week. Garner also stars as a young Mormon teenager in

Josh Brolin Joins Sin City: A Dame To Kill For

With the cameras cranking and the blue/green screens up, casting announcements for Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For are coming thick and fast. Yesterday brought word that Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been cast in a new character role. Now that has been followed with the news that Josh Brolin and Christopher Meloni are aboard. Brolin , it seems, will be bringing his recent, MIB III-showcased expertise at playing characters in their younger days for the film, as he’s signed on to take over Dwight from Clive Owen . Dwight’s story in Dame is a prequel tale that sees him hunted down by Ava Lord, the only woman he ever loved. His life goes into the gutter and he ends up with a completely different face later in life (hence the actor swap). “Dwight is a constant character throughout the Sin City world and A Dame To Kill For is a defining episode in his life,” Rodriguez and Miller said in a statement picked up by Collider . “We’re looking forward to Josh’s

Two Jamie's Join Sin City 2

Jaime King and Jamie Chung have boarded Sin City 2 , which began shooting on Monday in Austin. Robert Rodriguez is directing the movie with Frank Miller , the comic book icon who created the Sin City comics that were published by Dark Horse in the 1990s. Rodriguez and Miller teamed up for the stylish 2005 hit adaptation. Rodriguez and Miller wrote the script for the new movie, which is a combination of comics storylines and a new one written specifically by Miller for the movie. One of the storylines being adapted is A Dame to Kill For, originally published in 1993 and featuring a man named Dwight entangled in a complicated and deadly relationship with a femme fatale named Ava. Many of the original castmembers are returning for the sequel, including Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba and Rosario Dawson . (Rourke’s character Marv was killed by electrocution in the first movie but the Dame’s story takes place before and after that film’s events.) King played the golden-haired pros

Gerard Butler's Motor City Gets The Plugged Pulled

The plug was pulled this morning on Motor City , the revenge drama that was scheduled to start production late this month with Albert Hughes directing and Gerard Butler, Mickey Rourke and Adrien Brody starring. The film was in pre-production, and the crew was just told to go home. It is an abrupt and chaotic development. Motor City stalled after the film’s backers, Emmett/Furla Films, Envision Entertainment, and Mark Damon’s Foresight Entertainment, realized at the last moment that the release date given them by Warner Bros through its deal with Joel Silver’s Dark Castle turned out to be a drop dead date. Production was to start September 17th, meaning the film could only have 12 weeks of post production. It wasn’t enough time. They needed that studio release to justify all of the foreign distribution deals made for the film by Damon. As a result, they could not secure a bond and couldn’t move forward. Deadline is reporting they still want to make the picture, but they have to do

Is Mickey Rourke In Motor City & Sin City 2

Mickey Rourke is in talks to join Gerard Butler in the Albert Hughes-directed Motor City for Joel Silver’s Dark Castle. The drama, which centers on a man who is double crossed and seeks revenge on the guy who put him behind bars and took his woman, will be distributed domestically by Warner Bros. Rourke is also now in negotiations to make a return trip to Sin City 2 , the Robert Rodriguez/Frank Miller sequel. He’ll reprise his role of Marv, the hulking tough guy with a soft spot for women.
