Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Cast In Upcoming Matrix Film

Since the surprise announcement in August that The Matrix is indeed being rebooted for a fourth movie from returning writer-director Lana Wachowski , it’s been all quiet on the simulated-universe front – but now it seems the continuation of the sci-fi saga has found one of its leading stars. According to Variety , Yahya Abdul-Mateen II –perhaps best known for playing Black Manta in Aquaman – has been cast as one of the central figures of the new Matrix movie, set to join Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss on screen. Abdul-Mateen’s character hasn’t been confirmed, but early rumors around the film suggested that it could focus on a young Morpheus – such is the malleable nature of The Matrix’s continuity. Whether that’s the case or not is one to file firmly in 'wait and see'. Beyond Aquaman, Abdul-Mateen was recently seen in Jordan Peele’s Us, playing Adelaide’s father in the opening scene. He’s also appeared in The Handmaid’s Tale and Black Mirror, and will soon be seen in

Matrix 4 Is Happening With Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss

In a word: woah. After a round of talk about potential reboots, prequels and other spin-offs, big news has just broken about the future of the Matrix franchise, as Variety reports that Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are on to return for a fourth installment along with Lana Wachowski, back to co-write and direct. It's a huge step for the films, which changed the way action is portrayed in big Hollywood blockbusters and blended philosophy with kung-fu for a potent mix that, if the sequels couldn't quite match in terms of critical response and general appreciation, still became successes and had their moments. What the new film will feature is still being kept under wraps for now, though it'll continue the story of Neo, Trinity and co. Whether Laurence Fishburne will return as Morpheus is also up in the air, according to the trade mag, and there is mention of a potential new way forward with the role. Wachowski has been working on the script with Aleksandar Hemon a

Movie Review: The Bye Bye Man

Wave bye-bye to 90 minutes of your precious time. Review by Brandon Wolfe Though a booming surplus in the 1980s, horror movie icons have becoming a scarce commodity in recent years. The glut of villains such as Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Chucky, Leatherface, Pinhead and the Tall Man never really found a second generation in the decades since. Ghostface from Scream —more a title than a character, anyway—was the closest thing to come out of the ‘90s. The Aughts had a bit more luck, at least in the form of The Ring ’s Samara and Saw ’s Jigsaw, but even then, it wasn’t quite the same as the old days. Now, in the present day, horror shingle Blumhouse is breaking their backs trying to generate the next big icon, but the likes of Doris Zander and Bughuul aren’t quite sticking the way they intend them to. I bring this up because The Bye Bye Man feels like a very self-conscious attempt at filling that void. Its titular monster, a clawed, hooded specter (he sort of rese

Nolan’s Memento To Get Remade

You remember Christopher Nolan ’s mainstream debut right? An indie puzzler that played with chronology and trust? Took a while to get traction, but became successful? Someone clearly feels that we’ve gone far too long without a remake of Nolan’s Memento . The 2000 film, which starred Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano in the story of the amnesiac Leonard trying to uncover a dark secret about the murder of his wife, gained plenty of attention for its fascinating construction, blending black and white footage that plays chronologically and color scenes shown in reverse order. This apparent new version is coming about because AMBI Pictures nabbed the rights recently and has decided that 15 years is long enough for a film to enjoy classic status without being remade. “Memento has been consistently ranked as one of the best films of its decade,” says AMBI Pictures’ Andrea Iervolino. “People who’ve seen Memento 10 times still feel they need to see it one more time. This is

Knife Fight Review. Is it Worth Your Money?

Knife Fight Review By: MattInRC Does the Liberal-leaning Knife Fight engage the audience in the war that is a political campaign, or is it bound for a scandal of its own? The political drama Knife Fight suggests that most campaigns are more like gladiatorial battles than efforts to serve the public good. Fraught with sexual scandals, drug use, and other missteps that can ruin even the toughest of people, the life of a politician is displayed as a thankless and even dangerous affair. Having run two city council campaigns myself, I'm not sure I agree with this assessment; and yet there is much about Knife Fight with which I can identify from my experiences. Unfortunately, the portrayals within are neither accurate nor inspiring, with a serious lean towards the Liberal viewpoint. In many ways, it's no better than this year's other political flop The Campaign. Paul Turner ( Rob Lowe , The West Wing series) is the best political strategist for hire: he can fi
