John Wick Spin-Off Ballerina Hires A Director

With a TV show set in the assassin-heavy world of John Wick already in the works, the films' influence continues to spread. Lionsgate has Len Wiseman on board to direct Ballerina , a female-fronted movie spin-off. Shay Hatten, who was one of the writers on most recent Wick stint Parabellum, has worked on the script, which Deadline has learned will feature the character of Ballerina, played in Parabellum by newcomer Unity Phelan, though for the spin-off we could see someone else take over the role. Ballerina will track a young assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family, which feels very much a Wick-style story. Whether Keanu Reeves will crop up remains to be seen, but expect it to be cameo if anything. John Wick: Chapter 4, meanwhile, is in development for a potential 2021 release. First Look Of Vanessa Kirby As Hattie Shaw

Dwayne Johnson Instagrammed our first look of Vanessa Kirby as Hattie Shaw, sister of Deckard Shaw. “ Deadpool 2 ” director, David Leitch who also gave us “ John Wick ” and “ Atomic Blonde ” will direct Universal’s “ Fast & Furious ” spinoff movie, “ Hobbs and Shaw ” focusing on Dwayne Johnson ’s character Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham ’s character, Deckard Shaw, both of whom had appeared in recent installments of this franchise. This project was why Universal Pictures moved “Fast & Furious 9” to 2020. The main writer of this franchise, Chris Morgan, returns again to pen the script for this spinoff which reportedly will be about Diplomatic Security Service agent, Luke Hobbs and former bad guy turned Hobbs’ friend, Deckard Shaw (Statham) as they go off on their own adventure. Details on that what that adventure is about or which villain they’re after, are not yet disclosed. Vanessa Kirby plays an agent and Shaw’s sister. Discuss this with fellow SJF fans on Facebook .

David Leitch Directing Hobbs & Shaw Spin-Off

As Universal guns the engine on the first planned spin-off from the Fast & Furious franchise, the studio has pinpointed the person it wants to wrangle Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham for the film. John Wick and Atomic Blonde director David Leitch is directing the film. It makes sense that a film featuring the two would demand a director who has proven they can bring action scenes to life, and Leitch – who moved from stunt co-ordination and second unit work to co-direct the first Wick with Chad Stahelski – has certainly shown he's got the flair for it. Chris Morgan has written the script for the new film, which doesn't yet have a name, but should boast Johnson's Luke Hobbs and Statham's recently redeemed Deckard Shaw on their own mission, minus any candy asses. Universal wants this one in cinemas for July next year, and so it needs the wheels to hit the road quickly. Leitch's most recent job was directing Deadpool 2, which opens in the UK on 16 May

John Wick TV Series In The Works "The Continental" Expect To See Keanu Reeves

Talked about by team John Wick for a couple of years now, the TV spin-off from the Keanu Reeves -starring action franchise is officially moving forward in the States. US cable channel Starz, which is aligned with film producers Lionsgate, is working up The Continental , a series set in the Wick universe. As you might expect from that title, the show's focus will be the wider world assassins and the inner workings of the Continental Hotel chain that serves as a refuge for them. Wick originators Chad Stahelski and David Leitch are involved as producers alongside franchise writer Derek Kolstad. Chris Collins is in charge of writing the first episode and will run the show, with Stahelski stepping in to direct that initial outing. Expect the usual frenetic fights and bullet exchanges.\ While Reeves won't be the lead in the series, he'll be popping up if the team have their way. "I think you can expect to see him at some point on the series," Starz’s head of prog

Are You Interested In Watching A #JohnWick TV Series?

They stole his car, they killed his dog and they haven't even released his sequel yet but John Wick is being dragged out of retirement once more for a prequel TV series. Director Chad Stahelski, while talking through the origins of John Wick: Chapter 2 , opened up to SlashFilm about the proposed small screen spinoff. "We’re not doing a prequel [with Chapter 2]," he explains. "We wanted to, it just didn’t fit quite where we’re at…. we’d save that for other aspects of the property. Lionsgate is very interested in doing a John Wick TV show, and that seems very appealing to us, to give those creative ideas to that entity, because I think in TV you could really expand on what that is, and greater than we could in just a two-hour film." The prospect of watching Wick tear up the Russian underworld as their 'Baba Yaga' and seeing just exactly how he killed that guy with a pencil is quite the prospect. However, with the films' signature gun-fu and prec

#JohnWick2 Begins Filming This Fall

We already knew it was happening, but now we have a timescale. Following up the stonking original with some alacrity, John Wick 2 will rage into production in the autumn of this year. Keanu Reeves, directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, and producer Basil Iwanyck are all returning for more mayhem. “We have ideas for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original,” Stahelski said a couple of months ago. “It’s the matter of story and how much you like the character. That’s always the most important. If there’s great action but you have a character that no-one likes and doesn’t have charisma you’re not going to watch it. Look at any great action star, whether it’s Harrison Ford or Liam Neeson or Robert Downey Jr., pick a name, you love the guy first. Good action, bad action, you just love them in action. So we want to make sure we have a story and a character that everybody loves and then we’ll dress it with action that we promise will be awesome

John Wick Sequel Could Happen

The first film hasn’t even made it over here yet, but John Wick directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch are already mulling over ideas for a sequel to the action thriller, which is in development. John Wick finds Keanu Reeves as the titular tough guy, who has given up bullet slinging for a quiet life after his wife dies. But, because he’s a cinematic assassin, his life can never quite be that easy or calm. On a random errand, he runs afoul of some gangsters who take a shine to his car. Rebuffed, they track him down and take everything, even killing his beloved dog. Enraged, Wick picks up the tools of his trade once more and soon no one is safe... Stuntmen-turned-directors Stahelski and Leitch (the latter isn’t credited but definitely worked on calling the shots) made something that US audiences have embraced as a cult hit and has helped boost Reeves’ career. While there are no specifics on the sequel’s story or even if the star will return, the filmmakers know their focus, as th

John Wick Review: Face-Shootings are Apparently In

John Wick combines slick action, perfectly-placed humor, and a puppy. Go figure. In John Wick , Keanu Reeves plays a cold-blooded hitman whose world is turned upside down when a trio of Russian mobsters destroy the one connection to his deceased wife. The action flick - directed by stuntmen Chad Stahelski and David Leitch - takes Wick on a vicious killing spree, as he systematically eliminates his enemies all the way to the top dog Viggo Tarasov, played by Michael Nyqvist. Along the way, Wick will renew old acquaintances, like fellow assassin Ms. Perkins (Adrianne Palicki) and former partner Marcus (Willem Dafoe). As he works his way to the top, Wick becomes the irresistible force to Tarasov's immovable object, taking us full circle to the movie's disturbing opening. Having zero expectations, I found Wick to be completely enjoyable. The action is fluid, the car stunts well-conceived, the humor perfectly placed. For two guys who never sat in the center chair o

October 2014 Movies On Our Radar

After two terrible months, October shapes up nicely in our On the Radar Preview. We hate being right. Last month, we predicted that the Domestic Box Office for September 2014 would be one of the worst in recent memory, and it sadly kept its promise, slogging in well under 2013 with $273.8m and nearly beating the venerable 2001 haul of $268.5m. The quarter was also the worst since 1996, taking in just $2.5b - yes, that period includes Summer 'blockbusters.' With these infamies behind us, we now move into the pre-Oscar/Holiday film season, a period that usually delivers memorable features while a few even make their case for February considerations. This month, we find an appealing mix of WWII tank drama, spine-tingling horror, as well as a few genuine Oscar contenders. Here is our On the Radar preview for October 2014: Annabelle (October 1st) Plot: A couple begin to experience terrifying supernatural occurrences involving a vintage doll shortly after their hom
