Sam Mendes #1917Movie Trailer

Sam Mendes , the Oscar®-winning director of Skyfall, Spectre and American Beauty , brings his singular vision to his World War I epic, 1917 . In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers—Blake’s own brother among them. 1917 is directed by Sam Mendes, who wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Showtime’s Penny Dreadful). The film is produced by Mendes and Pippa Harris (co-executive producer, Revolutionary Road; executive producer, Away We Go) for their Neal Street Productions, Jayne-Ann Tenggren (co-producer, The Rhythm Section; associate producer, Spectre), Callum McDougall (executive producer, Mary Poppins Returns, Skyfall) and Brian Oliver (executive producer, Rocketman; Black

James Bond To Become A Free Agent

The film, with a $250 million-plus budget , marks the last in a deal with MGM, which is expected to court many distributors as a major franchise could change hands. James Bond is about to become a free agent, setting off a scramble among studios eager to win distribution rights to one of Hollywood's few seemingly gold-plated franchise. Sony Pictures opens Spectre , the 24th official Bond movie, on Nov. 6 in North America (the Brits get an early look Oct. 26), as the 007 adventure chases box-office records established by 2012's Skyfall , which grossed $1.1 billion worldwide to become the biggest film in the series' 53-year history. With early tracking pointing toward an $80 million-plus domestic bow, the movie has Skyfall's $88 million debut in its sights. But even if the film proves a big success, as most believe it will, it could mark the end of the Sony/MGM collaboration . Spectre is the last in a two-picture deal that Sony struck in 2011 with MGM, which co

Hollywood's Positive Month Doesn't Cure The Patient's Long-Term Issues. By: MattInRC

Hollywood's Positive Month Doesn't Cure The Patient's Long-Term Issues. By: MattInRC Back in late March, we reviewed the top box office performers year-to-date but also lamented about Hollywood's continued domestic woes . Among the bad news we reported at that time: As of March 30th, the industry (compounded monthly) was down a staggering 63%; Five of the top 10 films were leftover releases from 2012; April was similarly terrible, reflecting a 12% loss from 2012 - at $634,100,000 - with a compounded-monthly loss of 75%; The market hasn't seen such poor performances since 2011. These bits of data could have created bad omens for the Summer 2013 schedule, which does not have an Avengers, Dark Knight Rises, or Skyfall (all of which made $2 billion domestically) to lead the charge. But, we did have several intriguing releases such as Star Trek: Into Darkness , Fast Six , and Iron Man 3 . So, how did the critical month of May fair for Hollywood? A

2012's Box Office Woes. What Do You Think?

2012's Box Office Woes By: MattInRC 2012 represented one of the best years for films in many years - The Avengers, Ted, Skyfall and others drew crowds to multiple showings with their original and well-written scripts, while creating instant Oscar buzz for Lincoln, Les Miserables and Moonrise Kingdom . In fact, revenue for 2012 was up 6.4% from 2011 with 1.4 billion people going to the movies, which on the surface would represent a win. But dig deeper into Hollywood's peak season - first week of May to Labor Day - and those numbers tell you a very different story. According to figures released from the Huffington Post and Box Office Mojo, we're surprised and disappointed to report that Hollywood actually had a record-low year. The actual number of tickets sold, a better indicator of foot traffic, was down 4 percent (532 million tickets) during the summer season, which represents the lowest amount since that number was tracked. Why should anyone care? Think about how mu

Top Bond Theme Songs

Top Bond Theme Songs  By: MattInRC  Now that Hollywood has rightly celebrated Adele's instant Bond classic Skyfall with an Oscar for Best Song , it got us thinking of the most memorable from the 007 franchise. To be honest, it's impossible to qualify such a list, as we're talking about radically different directions these themes have taken throughout its 50 year history. Choose electronics beats like Madonna's Die Another Day or Duran Duran's View to Kill over Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger and Moonraker ? No matter your preference, we love them all for the same reasons: deep orchestral melodies surrounded by powerful voices and that trademark Monte Hall Bond theme. Who does that mix better than the others is anyone's guess. For now, and without going into an actual numbered list, we present our favorites in the order they appeared: From Russia with Love - Among the lesser-known themes, Matt Monro busts out his best Andy Williams for a tasty p

Top 15 Films Of 2012. That's Right 15

In a year that saw some of the worst films ever, 2012 also brought us some of the most memorable. But how do you reduce a list from 65 to just 10 - you add five more ! Yes, SJF brought you an amazing 65 reviews in 2012 - how do I still have eyes after seeing that many? In short, there were so many good films that a top 10 just felt too small. I know that some of you might not agree with what you're about to see, but that's the great thing about 'best-of' lists: they should generate discussion and thoughtful consideration, while ultimately encouraging you to either catch a hidden gem for the first time, or to relive the moment when one became a favorite. We've been building this list all year, with some films receiving a last-minute bump or demotion based on their release date or a recent revisiting. To be clear, we include films that probably won't even be nominated for an Oscar, either because of their subject matter or their poor performance at thea

SKYFALL Review. Best Bond Movie

SKYFALL Review By: MattInRC Skyfall is richly crafted and engrossing, with an ending that solidifies its status among the best Bond movies ever. For those of us who've enjoyed James Bond over the years, there's been one issue haunting his gadget/girls hustler persona - is there a genuine person under those fancy suits and behind the wheel of his Aston Martin? Die Another Day sought to answer that by taking him off the grid, only to leave us with a great first act and an over-the-top third. And while origin tales such as Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace have entertained, our nagging question remained. Skyfall responds by delving deeper into the mythos, blending great storytelling, beautiful women, and an instantly classic bad guy into one of the best Bond movies ever. After a botched MI6 operation in Istanbul over a stolen hard drive containing a NOC list of agents and an ensuing motorcycle chase across the city, James Bond ( Daniel Craig , Layer Cake) fi
