Ryan Coogler Will Direct & Write Black Panther 2

Ryan Coogler is going back to Wakanda. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter the filmmaker behind Marvel’s landmark Black Panther has quietly closed a deal to write and direct the sequel. While the move was expected — Marvel wanted to keep the creative team as intact as possible and a sequel was never in any real doubt — the timing was always unclear. Black Panther, centering on T'Challa, the king of a fictional African country, was an outsized success both commercially and critically. The movie, which starred Chadwick Boseman as the titular hero, grossed $700 million domestically and more than $1.3 billion worldwide, and is also considered a contender for Oscar consideration. The movie became a defining cultural moment and touchstone, especially for the black community. In the weeks prior and after to the movie’s February release, both Marvel and Coogler’s camp were hounded about when a sequel deal would be inked. Typically, a filmmaker is more than willing to quickly s...

Avengers: #InfinityWar Rules The Box Office Again

Look, you knew that, barring some Thanos-level intervention that Avengers: Infinity War would dominate the box office once again. The only real question was by how much. With the movie breaking records seemingly every day, it managed a strong $112.4 million for its second weekend in the States alone. This latest success story for Marvel is now past $450 million in the US, and its global take has just passed a billion, with $1.16 billion in the bank. It still has a few countries left to debut, with China looking to deliver a strong response. It may not be likely to de-throne Titanic or Avatar , but it's still a huge smash by any metric. No pressure, Untitled Avengers Movie... New Anna Faris comedy Overboard , a gender-flipped remake of the 1987 Goldie Hawn/Kurt Russell pic took in $14.7 million, which was about inline with expectations. A Quiet Place slipped to third on $7.6 million, and I Feel Pretty was down to fourth, earning $4.9 million. Rampage rounded out the top...

#RampageMovie Conquers The Box Office

It looked for a while as though new entry Rampage , even given the draw of The Rock, might not be able to displace reigning movie A Quiet Place from the top of the box office. But, surprisingly for a film that features giant monsters smashing things, it squeaked past, earning $34.5 million, according to studio estimates. Worldwide, the new movie has taken in more than $148 million, and should be on course to be another success for Dwayne Johnson and director Brad Peyton. Still, A Quiet Place managed to score $32.6 million, so the horror thriller isn't exactly suffering. That film has taken nearly $100 million in just two weeks, and is past $151 million globally. That's despite new horror competition from Blumhouse's Truth Or Dare , which looked to target more of a teen audience. The film scared up $19 million for a third place launch, a fine opening given the movie's lower budget, but not quite the same level of success as, say, Get Out . Ready Player One was pu...

'Ready Player One' Is On Top Of The Box Office

Launching on Thursday to get a jump start on the Easter holiday weekend, Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One topped the box office across the pond. The movie earned $41.2 million across the three-day weekend, with a total of $53.2 million, according to studio estimates. Worldwide, the new movie took in $181.2 million, which is a solid start, and audiences seemed to like it, boding well for its future performance. Second place went to Tyler Perry's latest, the Taraji P. Henson-starring Acrimony . The revenge thriller took in $17.1 million. The new arrivals pushed Black Panther down a place to third, but the superhero pic still earned $11.2 million, passing $650 million in the States alone. Fourth was I Can Only Imagine on $10.7 million, while Pacific Rim Uprising , faced with new sci-fi competition, fell to fifth with $9.2 million. Globally, the situation was a lot healthier, as the movie has taken in a total of $231.9 million. Sherlock Gnomes was sixth, earning $7 mil...

Can Anyone Knock Off Black Panther?

For the first time since Avatar in 2009, Black Panther has clung to the top of the Stateside box office for a fifth weekend, seeing off the likes of Tomb Raider . The superhero smash has made more than $27 million this weekend, according to studio estimates. And Marvel's latest success story has hit another milestone, becoming only the seventh film ever to gross more than $600 million at the domestic box office. With its overseas takings, the movie has now crossed more than $1.1 billion. Tomb Raider could only manage $23.5 million in treasure found from audiences, earning it a second place launch. Will it go on to spawn a franchise, as Warner Bros. might hope? That will have to wait for its full takings figures to come in. More successful (especially in terms of budget vs. return) was faith-based drama I Can Only Imagine , which started its chart run in third $17 million, off the back of a $7 million budget. Slipping a couple of places to fourth, A Wrinkle In Time picked ...

#BlackPanther Is Unstoppable

The records keep on falling. Black Panther continues to be one of the strongest performers in the MCU after just a few days, and among the most successful films of this still-young year. With audience interest still high, the movie managed a $108 million weekend in the States. That has pushed the movie to a $400 million domestic total after just 10 days, the second fastest film to reach that level after Jurassic World . It's also now the fifth highest grossing film in Marvel's sprawling cinematic universe. Adding in its healthy $304 million overseas take (with more markets yet to open), the film has crossed $704 million worldwide, seemingly making a beeline for $1 billion. New comedy Game Night opened decently in second place, though far behind the current leader, earning $16 million. Peter Rabbit was pushed to third on $12.5 million. Alex Garland's new sci-fi pic Annihilation (which had a cinematic release in the States but is headed to Netflix elsewhere) landed fo...

#BlackPanther Opens Huge

Disney-Marvel's " Black Panther " is heading for a super-heroic $218 million debut over the four-day President's Day weekend at 4,020 North American locations, estimates showed Sunday. That number means that " Black Panther ," starring Chadwick Boseman and directed by Ryan Coogler, has doubled its original tracking in less than a month. The film, which carries an estimated $200 million production cost, had been tracking to bring in between an impressive $100 and $120 million when first estimates emerged on Jan. 25. Since then, "Black Panther" has become a must-see movie for many moviegoers, underlined when Thursday previews brought in $25.2 million, the largest Thursday night preview gross for a February opener and the second-largest preview gross for a Marvel film. The film's estimated three-day gross of $192 million is the highest debut ever for a February film and the fifth highest of all time. Combined with an estimated international...
