Movie Review: Suburbicon

Reject false Coens, even if Clooney-shaped. Review by Brandon Wolfe Ever since O Brother, Where Art Thou? , George Clooney has been a staple of some of the Coen Brothers’ sillier offerings in the 21st Century. Clooney has also appeared in their iffy Intolerable Cruelty as well as in the much stronger Burn After Reading . He has fashioned such a close working relationship with the Coens that he has now been entrusted with directing a script they’ve written. But just because you’ve worked with the Coens don’t make you the Coens. The Coens wrote the script for Suburbicon in 1986, shortly after completing Blood Simple , yet never produced it, for whatever reason. But, upon seeing the finished product, it’s clearly of a piece with their oeuvre. The acidic black comedy, the comically boneheaded characters, the caper gone awry, the creatively gruesome deaths are all very familiar. Cameron Diaz Joins Colin Firth For Gambit

Cameron Diaz is attached to star opposite Colin Firth in the Joel and Ethan Coen -scripted Gambit , a remake of the 1966 British caper starring Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine . Gambit is one of the first projects financed by Crime Scene Pictures , launched in May by writer/director/producer Adam Ripp and agent-turned-producer Rob Paris. Glen Basner’s FilmNation will launch Gambit to foreign buyers at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin. FilmNation and Crime Scene announced Diaz’s casting on Tuesday. Firth, a frontrunner for the Oscar for his performance in The King’s Speech, was previously attached to Gambit. Michael Hoffman (The Last Station) is directing the remake. Mike Lobbell is producing alongside Ripp and Paris. Hoffman begins shooting in London in May. Storyline revolves around a London art curator (Firth) who plots an elaborate scheme to con a wealthy collector into buying a fake Monet painting.
