BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

Rihanna Joins Luc Besson’s Valerian

Once a stalwart of soundtracks Rihanna has been making inroads into acting in the last few years with movies such as Battleship and DreamWorks Animation’s Home . She’s now landed her biggest role yet, joining the cast of Luc Besson’s ambitious new sci-fi tale, Valerian . Originally created by writer Pierre Christian and artist Jean-Claude Mezieres in 1967, the series of graphic novels charts the adventures of the titular time-travelling agent ( Dane DeHaan ) and his female sidekick, Laureline ( Cara Delevingne ). Clive Owen is also aboard, playing a man named Commander Arün Filitt, but Besson has not revealed details about Rihanna’s contribution, but it sounds like she'll be a key element of the story. This promises to be the biggest project Besson has tackled since The Fifth Element, with visions of a futuristic world that blends that film with Star Wars and Blade Runner, populated with all manner of weird creatures and just five human characters. He’s spending $180 milli

2012's Box Office Woes. What Do You Think?

2012's Box Office Woes By: MattInRC 2012 represented one of the best years for films in many years - The Avengers, Ted, Skyfall and others drew crowds to multiple showings with their original and well-written scripts, while creating instant Oscar buzz for Lincoln, Les Miserables and Moonrise Kingdom . In fact, revenue for 2012 was up 6.4% from 2011 with 1.4 billion people going to the movies, which on the surface would represent a win. But dig deeper into Hollywood's peak season - first week of May to Labor Day - and those numbers tell you a very different story. According to figures released from the Huffington Post and Box Office Mojo, we're surprised and disappointed to report that Hollywood actually had a record-low year. The actual number of tickets sold, a better indicator of foot traffic, was down 4 percent (532 million tickets) during the summer season, which represents the lowest amount since that number was tracked. Why should anyone care? Think about how mu

Why Battleship Was A Flop. Director Explains

Though Disney's John Carter took the brunt of the heat for being this year's first flop, another big-budget extravaganza actually did worse: the board-game-inspired alien invasion flick Battleship . To date, Battleship has grossed $59.8 million in North America—nearly $7 million less than John Carter brought in by its fourth week. The film's director, Peter Berg , has finally opened up about the epic flop. He said via The Huffington Post that he hopes to learn from the experience and (hopefully) move on to a more successful project in the future. "I have a movie in theaters right now which has obviously underperformed in many ways. When [a movie] doesn't work, it's an ... interesting opportunity to look at what went wrong and how it went wrong." As for what actually went wrong? According to Berg the concept, and the budget propping it up, were just too "big." "It was a movie that I tried as hard as I could to get inside of. But t

The Avengers Sunk My Battleship

SATURDAY 9 AM, 5TH UPDATE: These official Friday and weekend numbers for North America are worse than anyone expected. Everything is tanking except Marvel’s The Avengers which sucked all the air out of the box office for the 3rd straight weekend. Today it will become the highest grossing domestic release in Disney’s history. Joss Whedon’s superhero assembly is already the studio’s highest grossing film of all time globally, and will pass the $450M mark this weekend. It is currently the #6 film of all time globally, the #10 film of all time domestically, and the #9 film of all time internationally. The new foreign gross is $682.6M and domestic $417.3M for a global cume of $1.099.9M. Demonstrating just how disastrous the new movies are opening, audiences gave Universal’s Battleship only a ‘B’ CinemaScore, Lionsgate’s What To Expect When You’re Expecting a ‘B-’, and Paramount’s The Dictator a ‘C’. So don’t expect word of mouth to improve these numbers. Overall moviegoing this weeken

BATTLESHIP Review By: Matt C

BATTLESHIP Review By: Matt C Matt delivers another great movie review and hits it on the mark. BATTLESHIP is a clean miss that borrows too much and inspires too little. Hollywood must really be desperate these days: it's bad enough that audiences have endured reboots ad nausiem, but when we see movies based on popular board games, it's time for an intervention. Take the most recent example of an industry about to go squarely off the tracks  BATTLESHIP -. It looks like Transformers , feels like Top Gun with a hint of Star Trek, and its premise is a mish-mash of several noteworthy alien invasion flicks. While I will admit the ocean backdrop looks and sounds terrific, it's the story which takes on water early. Filled with more cliches than an interview with an NBA player and reeking of second-rate talent, Battleship plods on too long at the beginning and only somewhat redeems itself at the end by parading real-life veterans in front of the cameras to man the old USS

BATTLESHIP Review By:RAMA

BATTLESHIP Review By:RAMA So what did RAMA think of BATTLESHIP? Matt's review to come soon. Congratulations, director Peter Berg , you are now the new Michael Bay, and that’s not a compliment. Just as I suspected.. the experience is like watching Battle: Los Angeles meets Transformers meets full blown advertisement for the U.S. Navy. In the words of that weatherman from the comedy Anchorman.. “Loud Noises!”.. Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs Battleship, an epic-scaled action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Inspired by Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancée; Alexander Skarsgård as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate

Rihanna To Play Villian In Fast 6

Rihanna is truly showing no signs of slowing down any time fast. Today it has been revealed that she has been cast to play a villainous role in the upcoming blockbuster The Fast and the Furious 6 . The You Da One singer will star in the movie alongside Vin Diesel and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson . An inside source told the Sun, 'Rihanna impressed with her acting debut in Battleship.' 'Writers think she’ll be perfect for the role. Her character has plenty of bite and doesn’t take any prisoners — just like her in real life.' The 24-year-old singer recently made her leap to the big screen playing a weapons officer named Raikes in the mega-movie Battleship . The source continued, 'It’s a step up the ladder for her and could lead to bigger action roles.' The sixth installment of the speed racing franchise is set for release in May 2013 but production on the film is said to begin next month. This time the movie will be set over on this side of t

Super Bowl XLVI Movie Trailer Round Up

This year’s crop of Super Bowl advertising for 2012's upcoming blockbusters followed the seemingly standard pattern of recent years: more and more are either getting teased in increasingly tiny chunks days before the match itself and some, like the G.I. Joe: Retaliation trailer , are online in full before a single touchdown has been scored. But even with the early sneak peeks, a few actually debuted on the day itself, so we thought we’d slap them together into one big list and take a look to see how effective they were. First up, The Avengers . It's had plenty of exposure, and, yes, we’ve seen a lot of this material already, but this nifty spot assembles what it has to work with efficiently and will get your blood up. It’s obviously a bonus when you’ve got a charismatic ensemble led by Robert Downey Jr , but director Joss Whedon also has plenty of set-piece eye-candy to help up the wow factor. Got to love that shot of the team together in New York, presenting The Hulk as just

Alexander Skarsgard Could Go East

True Blood star Alexander Skarsgard is in talks to join Brit Marling in The East , a thriller Marling co-wrote with her The Sound of My Voice collaborator Zal Batmanglij, who is directing. While plot details are hazy, the story revolves around a female agent who infiltrates an eco-terrorist group. The title of the movie refers to the group’s name. If a deal comes together, Skarsgard would play the leader of the group who seeks revenge against unethical corporations. Michael Costigan of Scott Free Prods. is producing the movie, which is eyeing a tentative Nashville shoot in October and November. Fox Searchlight, which released Marling’s Another Earth and is opening Sound of My Voice , will likely distribute the film. Skarsgard , who stars on Blood as the vampire Eric Northman, has slowly been building a solid feature career. He stars as the villain in Rod Lurie's Straw Dogs , which opens Sept. 16, as well as Melancholia , the latest pic from Lars von Trier. Also in th
