It Sequel Arrives In 2019

Given the success of It , we're half expecting Pennywise the clown to show up with some shiny new gold teeth and maybe a more luxurious balloon. But regardless of what the central terror does in the intervening years, the follow-up to the first film will hit theaters in 2019. Andy Muschietti will be back to direct the adaptation of the second half of Stephen King's book, which follows the heroic Loser's Club as they return to Derry, Maine after 27 years. They thought they'd escaped the place and its nightmare creature, but a devastating phone call brings them all back. The new movie will also feature flashbacks to the kids' story too. It has been scaring away the competition at the box office for weeks (it was finally unseated by Kingsman: The Golden Circle this weekend) and snatched a host of records, including the largest opening for a horror film in the States, largest opening for a movie based on a book, and is the most successful cinematic scare ever in t

Movie Review: It

Don't be a bozo and miss It. Review by Brandon Wolfe Cinematic history is littered with the corpses of bad Stephen King adaptations. For every stone classic like Carrie or The Shining , you need to hold your nose and step over scores of Dreamcatcher s or Mangler s. Though possibly the most prolific horror author in history, his work often seems resistant to filmic translation. Perhaps that says something how inimitable King’s prose is, with so much of it taking place within his characters’ minds, or maybe it’s simply that his material doesn’t often enough find its way into the hands of filmmakers capable of doing it justice (even Kubrick famously chucked most of King’s novel out the window for his Shining adaptation; the 1997 TV-movie starring Steven Weber is far more faithful, and yet another moldering failure). When one assesses Stephen King’s body of work, it’s clear that the portions that exist solely on the page are largely what count. Now one of King’s most revered boo

Akiva Goldsman To Direct 'Firestarter' Remake

You just can't keep a good horror concept down. Or even one that was just okay originally. With Stephen King 's work still being adapted all over the place, his Firestarter is getting a second spark of cinematic life with Akiva Goldsman aboard to direct. First published in 1980, Firestarter was originally adapted into the eponymous film in 1984, with Drew Barrymore starring as young Charlene "Charlie" McGee, who has pyrokinetic abilities and can see the near future. As her powers bloom, she's targeted by a government agency looking to turn them into a weapon. Jason Blum, who has just produced Goldsman's latest directorial outing, horror pic Stephanie, used that film's opening night screening at the Overlook Film Festival to announce that they are developing the new Firestarter for Universal. The studio has been trying to get this one burning again since at least 2010, but the Blumhouse team, which has seen success with Split and Get Out This year,

Stephen King's The Stand To Become Miniseries and Feature Film

Eight episodes and a movie. By Brandon Wolfe While the film version of Stephen King’s It may have recently fallen apart, the adaptation of the author’s apocalyptic magnum opus The Stand is still going strong. The Fault in Our Stars ’ Josh Boone is still set to direct the adaptation, which he has said in the past he wanted to make into several films to do proper justice to the unusually lengthy novel. However, the plan has changed, as it has now been reported that The Stand will be adapted into an eight-episode miniseries for Showtime, which will then culminate in a theatrical film. Stephen King fans might feel a sense of déjà vu here, as this was initially the plan for the proposed adaptation of the author’s Dark Tower series before that project fell apart. It is certainly an ambitious plan, since it requires a lot of extracurricular work from moviegoers, many of whom might not even have Showtime (presumably, the film itself will function as a stand-alone so as not to alienat
