#LadyBird Surged Into The Top 10 At This Weekends Box Office

Following the extended holiday last weekend, it felt as though the US box office was still slumbering, heavy with Thanksgiving leftovers and little energy for much that was new. No new wide releases emerged, so Pixar's Coco ruled the roost once again, leading a top 10 that was almost unchanged with $26.1 million, according to studio estimates. Managing to stay up despite missing expectations, Justice League saw in its third weekend in second place with $16.5 million, bringing its Stateside total to $197.3 million. Wonder , a considerable success so far, retained third position, adding $12.5 million and climbing closer to $100 million. At fourth, Thor: Ragnarok earned $9.6 million, pushing its own US total to date closer to $300 million. And at the back of the top five pack we have Daddy's Home 2 , which took in $7.5 million. Murder On The Orient Express repeated in sixth with $6.7 million, while the first change in the chart comes as Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird wi

Justice League Under Performs At The Box Office

The reviews have not been exactly positive and speculation has been rife as to how Justice League would perform at the American box office. As it turns out, the movie arrived a little beneath its original stellar expectations, yet still managed to top the charts with a solid $96 million opening in the States, according to studio estimates. Movie Review: Justice League- Factoring in overseas business, the DCEU's latest entry is now on $281.5 million worldwide, which is healthy if not stellar. The domestic opening has been seen as a stumble after the success of Wonder Woman, but the big test will be repeat business. This new superhero arrival knocked Thor: Ragnarok from the top spot, but you have to head down to third to find it, as family drama Wonder , smartly counter-programmed against the League, saw big success. Writer/director Stephen Chbosky's latest opened to $27 million. And, as previously mentioned, Thor and co. were nudged down to third place with $21.7 milli

Movie Review: Lady Bird

Greta Gerwig flies home in autobiographical tale. Review by Brandon Wolfe Greta Gerwig spent her formative years in Sacramento and clearly she has the same love/hate relationship with the city that all of its residents inevitably grapple with at one point or another. Complaining about Sacramento is a rite of passage for Sacramentans. Not being as culturally impressive as nearby places like San Francisco, Napa and Tahoe tends to create a chip on the shoulder for those of us who call the capitol city home. When one character dismisses the place as “the Midwest of California” in Gerwig’s directorial debut Lady Bird , it perfectly encapsulates the self-loathing that all Sacramentans often give voice to. In a state full of scenic wonders, Sacramento is unmistakably a bit basic. Yet while Lady Bird is honest about Sacramento’s lack of pizazz, it’s also a film that is head-over-heels in love with the place. When sullen protagonist Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) h

Lady Bird Trailer Starring Saoirse Ronan

In Lady Bird , Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson ( Saoirse Ronan ) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom ( Laurie Metcalf ), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father ( Tracy Letts ) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.
