Ava DuVernay To Direct DC's "New Gods"

Variety is reporting Ava DuVernay is stepping into the superhero universe. The filmmaker has come on board to direct “ New Gods ” at Warner Bros. as part of the studio’s DC Extended Universe. “ New Gods ,” based on the DC Comics series of the same name, is aimed at creating a new universe of properties for the studio. Created and designed by Jack Kirby, the comic was first released in 1971. The movie marks the second major superhero tentpole directed by a woman, following another DC property: Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman.” DuVernay directed Disney’s “ A Wrinkle in Time ,” becoming the first woman of color in Hollywood to helm a live-action film with a production budget of $100 million. Selma Review: Gripping, Powerful Submission to the Oscar Run

Selma represents the first contender for Oscar glory. Review by Matt Cummings Although 2015 has arrived, we're still dealing with the last-minute submissions for the 2014 Oscar season, an issue based mainly on the lack of nationwide releases for a select few. This isn't anything new: Zero Dark Thirty premiered released during the 2011 Oscar season but didn't make it way into wide release until the middle of January 2012. The same goes for Selma , the powerful, gripping tale of Martin Luther King, Jr's struggles to bring voting rights to African Americans. Documenting the struggles of Martin Luther King, Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his movement try to re-establish voting rights for African Americans, a tense and prejudice United States of 1964 is centered in the city of Selma, Alabama. Here, a march is planned to the state's capital of Montgomery, location of Governor George Wallace (Tim Roth) and his racist policies that have made it nearly impossible

January 2015 Movies On Our Radar

Is January the month where films go to die? You decide in our January preview! Story by Matt Cummings After an incredibly busy month of December that saw no less than 12 interesting flicks go for our hard-earned dollars , January arrives with a distinctly "Don't forget about us!" feel. January has usually been the month where films go to die, cast off to the Island of Misfit Toys after entertaining earlier Oct-Dec releases. The reality: most of these will flop, some will linger around like Jay and Silent Bob, while others will make a profit and actually lead in the box office until around March. This year might be a different story, with one of the most anticipated slate of films in recent memory. For now. we're holding to our theory but for now there are a few that could be interesting. Our list includes a talking bear, a computer hacker, a sniper, and the end of Bryan Mills. Welcome to our January 2015 movie preview! January 6 Taken 3 Plot

Join The #MarchOn Movement

It started in Selma but we still #MarchOn The march started in Selma, Alabama when one man took a stand, and many joined him. Rallying against injustice and demanding equality, people brought together a nation. And today, we still march on because progress knows no finish line. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson ( Tom Wilkinson ) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernay’s SELMA tells the story of how the revered leader and vision

December 2014 Movies on Our Radar

The final push in 2014 for Oscars nominations and our hard-earned dollars is upon us - welcome to our December On the Radar Preview! November 2014 was filled with tasty movie goodness, offering solid Oscar candidates with a collection of enjoyable animated fare. From Penguins of Madagascar to Big Hero 6 , November began and ended with some of the best the genre had to offer. Even the live-action sequel The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 delivered on many levels. The only stinker was the disappointing Dumb and Dumber To (but don't tell our writer Brandon Wolfe we said that). But now, it's on to December and the final push towards Oscar season, with Hollywood not sure if they'll beat 2013, but happily relieved that Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: The Winter Solider saved them from a potentially disastrous year. But unlike previous months - especially August and September - our worry this month lies in the sheer number of quality releases:

Robert De Niro To Take On George Wallace And Midnight Run 2

Robert De Niro To Take On George Wallace And Midnight Run 2 Buried in a Deadline Hollywood story about Robert De Niro's representation (he's just moved from the William Morris Agency back to his old home at Creative Artists) are some snippets about his upcoming roles. Frustratingly there are no details, other than the brief, tantalising mention that it's in "mid development", about a new Midnight Run, but the prospect of De Niro returning to Jack Walsh, one of his funniest screen creations, is a doozy. Paul Weitz' Another Night in Suck City, co-starring Casey Affleck, is based on a memoir by Nick Flynn (Another Bullshit Night in Suck City) at the centre of which is a fractured father/son relationship. De Niro as Affleck's father? And Selma, by Precious director Lee Daniels, will see De Niro take on the mantle of George Wallace. Not the comedian (he's not quite that versatile) but the governor of Alabama and four-time presidential candidate. Wallace was
