2017 Oscar Nominations Have Been Announced

Better get your tux to a dry cleaners, pronto – it’s Oscar time again. The nominees for the 89th annual Academy Awards have been announced, and as expected, razzle-dazzle old-school musical La La Land has come out on top with a record-equaling 14 nominations. Hot on its toe-tapping heels are cerebral alien sci-fi Arrival and generational urban drama Moonlight , which both earned six nominations apiece. There were nine Best Picture nominations this year – a category that can be anywhere from five to ten – with a diverse list that included a Western ( Hell Or High Water ), a war movie ( Hacksaw Ridge ), a sci-fi ( Arrival ). See the list after the Jump... Perhaps in response to last year’s #OscarsSoWhite controversy, there was plenty of recognition for films with non-white casts or stories, most notably Moonlight, Hidden Figures and Fences. During a characteristically chin-scratching pre-recorded announcement video (never let it be said the Academy doesn’t know how to string s

Top 10 Movies of 2016

2016's top films feature a diversity of genres, but was the industry better off as a result? Story by Matt Cummings I think it's safe to say that 2016 was one of the worst years in recent memory: shootings, rising tensions abroad, and (another) highly-divisive election was book-ended by high-profile deaths that began their march in January (David Bowie), ripped through the Summer (Prince), and ended with an awful December (George Michael, Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds). Similarly, we saw a movie industry plagued with more than a dozen high-profile failures and outright disappointments ( Independence Day: Resurgence, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Norm of the North, The Fifth Wave among many, many others). But, a few films did rise to the top, punctuated by stellar performances, incredible action sequences, smart comedy, and beautiful musical moments. As always, our list is generated on factors such as memorability, quality, and a completely selfish desire of whet

Moana Wins Thanksgiving Box Office

Disney's very good year continued apace across the typically busy Thanksgiving holiday weekend – which for movies usually stretches from the Wednesday before the actual celebration. Moana , the company's latest animated offering, got off to a strong start at the American box office, earning $55.5 million for the weekend and $81.1 million across the period from its release on Wednesday, according to studio estimates. That figure means Moana enters the charts as Disney's second-highest opening in the Thanksgiving period, behind just Frozen, and seems likely to have the same longevity – adding in its overseas totals, the movie is sailing towards $100 million after just a few days. With the all-powerful 'toon sweeping into the top spot, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them had to vacate its throne after just one week, but still earned a healthy $45.1 million across the three-day weekend. And Doctor Strange slipped to third with $13.3 million after four weeks in th

Movie Review: #Arrival

The brainy and beautiful Arrival is also a powerful cinematic experience. Review by Matt Cummings WARNING: This review contains mild spoilers. If the cinema year of 2016 has proven one thing, it's that Hollywood still isn't afraid to let loose with an intelligent film while impaling us with big, dumb (and only sometimes enjoyable) action fare. Arrival is a triumph of modern film-making, a bold, intelligent tale that's far deeper than the trailers might suggest, and immediately establishes itself as one of a handful of must-see films this Fall. Linguistic Dr. Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is summoned to one of 12 landing sites throughout the world to decode messages by an alien species she lovingly refers to as Abbott and Costello. These gigantic multipeds utter a seemingly incomprehensible language, punctuated by a beautiful inky broken circular writing. These 12 massive crescent-shaped vessels stand elegantly on their sides, suspended by anti-gravity that all
