BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

In White Bird: A Wonder Story Trailer

From the best-selling author of Wonder , the book that sparked a movement to “choose kind,” comes the inspirational next chapter. In White Bird: A Wonder Story , we follow Julian ( Bryce Gheisar ), who has struggled to belong ever since he was expelled from his former school for his treatment of Auggie Pullman. To transform his life, Julian’s grandmother ( Helen Mirren ) finally reveals to Julian her own story of courage — during her youth in Nazi-occupied France, a boy shelters her from mortal danger. They find first love in a stunning, magical world of their own creation, while the boy’s mother (Gillian Anderson) risks everything to keep her safe. From director Marc Forster ( Finding Neverland and Christopher Robin ), screenwriter Mark Bomback, and based on R.J. Palacio’s book, White Bird: A Wonder Story, like Wonder before it, is an uplifting movie about how one act of kindness can live on forever.       Discuss this with fellow SJF fans on Facebook . TV Review: The X-Files "My Struggle II" (Season Finale)

Aliens, please abduct Chris Carter. Review by Brandon Wolfe One of the greatest pitfalls of our current recycle-bin culture is that some of the nostalgic curios being dusted off almost certainly belong dead, and The X-Files has sadly proved emblematic of this hazard. The idea of Mulder and Scully returning once more into the paranormal fray sounds fantastic at first blush until you stop to recall that The X-Files has already died a series of ignoble deaths. There was the slow decline of the original series’ run into a morass of wheezy misguidedness. There was the second feature film, quite possibly the most stillborn attempt at franchise resuscitation ever endeavored. And now, as this current six-episode revival comes to a close, it’s hard to argue against the notion that The X-Files is the bolt of lightning that is never going back into that jar. It’s far too damaged, too hopelessly ungainly and exhausted to endure as it currently stands. The truth is out of gas. The problem,

TV Review: The X-Files "Home Again"

Two great episodes are trash-compacted into a single uneven one. Review by Brandon Wolfe “Home Again,” written by another X-Files MVP, Glen Morgan (who also co-wrote possibly the best episode of the entire series with the similarly titled, yet unrelated “Home”), is an episode with a severe identity crisis. Perhaps as a byproduct of the unusually low number of episodes in this limited engagement, it’s essentially two wholly distinct episodes battling it out for dominance in an hourlong arena. Two very good episodes, it must be said, but two highly incompatible ones. Had “Home Again” chosen a side for which story it wanted to tell, it might have been a new classic. As it stands, it’s a deeply confused episode of television, its virtues diminished by its bifurcated structure. In Philadelphia, a HUD official is enacting a relocation plan for the downtown homeless to clear the way for good ol’ gentrification to commence, a plan that includes fire hoses and excises compassion. TV Review: The X-Files “Mulder & Scully Meet the Were-Monster”

Mulder gets his groove back and so does the show. Review by Brandon Wolfe Writer Darin Morgan only wrote four episodes of The X-Files , yet he arguably made the largest impression of any writer to ever work on the series. Morgan brought a uniquely askew perspective to the series, opening doors that the show might otherwise have left to remain closed. His first script, Season 2’s circus-freak whodunit “Humbug,” was the first time an overtly comedic tone had ever been attempted on the theretofore straight-faced series. His next three scripts were the tragicomedy “Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose,” often held up by critics as one of the finest episodes of television; “War of the Coprophages,” a squirmy-hilarious tale of killer cockroaches invading a small town; and Morgan’s pièce de résistance, “Jose Chung’s From Outer Space,” a mindbending hall of mirrors that satirized and deconstructed the series before the outside world even got the chance. Morgan never wrote for The X-Files again fo

TV Review: The X-Files "Founder's Mutation"

Seems like old times. Review by Brandon Wolfe There was nowhere to go but up after “My Struggle,” and “Founder’s Mutation,” the second episode of the X-Files relaunch, indeed goes up. Not to the dizzying heights of the show in its best days, but no one is, or should be, expecting that from this limited engagement. All we want right now is to not be saddened by the spectacle of The X-Files being drudged up for the opportunity to disappoint us one more time. “Founder’s Mutation” does not do that. The best that can be said about it is that, barring a few stray story elements and some facial wrinkles on the leads, it’s an episode that could have fallen through a wormhole from 1995. Mulder and Scully are officially back on their old beat, regardless of how little sense that might make. However, the nagging questions and lapsed logic at play can reasonably be excused in the name of both expediency (there are, after all, only six episodes) and the desire to see our heroes returned to t

TV Review: The X-Files "My Struggle"

Wherein Chris Carter struggles to make his show relevant again. Review by Brandon Wolfe During the ‘90s heyday of The X-Files , fans (self-identified as “X-Philes”) would often proclaim series creator Chris Carter as the George Lucas of television. The label made a certain amount of sense. Both men had created sci-fi franchises that captured the hearts and minds of the world in a very big way, with central characters that were almost instantly iconic, and with the cultish influences from each man’s youth woven into the tapestries of each property. Both enterprises were visionary and crackled with innovation, inhabiting worlds that seemed carefully crafted and intricately thought out. But then the Star Wars prequels came out, concurrent with the creative implosion of The X-Files in its drawn-out final years, and people were still calling Carter the George Lucas of television, but now for entirely less laudable reasons. Both men had devolved into geysers of ill-conceived concepts an

New #XFiles Poster

There are also a few fresh details about the new, six-episode run bringing the conspiracy-investigating, monster-tackling duo back to our screens next year, including the fact that we reunite with Mulder when he’s in a dark place, but that Scully’s a little more settled, as usual. “I like where we find Mulder and Scully in their relationship,” Anderson tells the magazine. “I also like the area of zeitgeist that we step in to. It’s on point and raises some very interesting issues. And question marks.” According to series creator Chris Carter, back for this new limited run, the show will tackle our post-9/11 world. “A lot has happened since then. A lot of rollback of rights and liberties in the name of our protection. We’re being spied on now, we’re being lied to — all things that, for me, remind me of when I grew up, which was right around Watergate. I think we’re in similar and much more dire times right now.” But possibly even more exciting than that is learning who has been wr

Do You Believe? #TheXFiles Official Trailer

The miniseries picks up with David Duchovny 's Mulder and Gillian Anderson 's Scully in very different places in their lives, but still committed to finding the truth behind the big conspiracies that have plagued them. But there’s also time to investigate other mysteries, too... And yes, there are definitely going to be appearances by old favourites such as William B. Davis' Cigarette Smoking Man, despite his seeming death by giant bloomin’ missile in the series finale back in 2002. And the likes of Mitch Pileggi, Annabeth Gish, Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, Bruce Harwood and Nicholas Lea are all back in some fashion. Mostly it seems like everyone is a bit more beardy. Well, not Scully. Watch the trailer after the Jump... Joel McHale, Lauren Ambrose, Robbie Amell and Rhys Darby are among the new co-stars, Chris Carter is at the controls as always, and The X-Files is back, at least on US screens, on January 24 next year. The Lone Gunmen Will Show Up In The X-Files

Given that they were obsessed with conspiracies and mysteries of all stripes, the biggest story The Lone Gunmen might end up investigating is their own. Though they appeared to die on a late episode of The X-Files , the cult Favorite characters played by Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund and Bruce Harwood are set to show up on the new revival of the series. They’re just the latest veterans of the show to join the new, six-episode incarnation alongside returning stalwarts David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Mitch Pileggi and William B. Davis . And yes, it seems death cannot hold John Fitzgerald Byers (Harwood), Melvin Frohike (Tom Braidwood) and Richard Langly (Dean Haglund), even if they couldn’t quite sustain their own spin-off. Bryan Fuller Wants A #Hannibal Film

Fannibals, take heart! (Not literally, of course.) In a Comic-Con interview with Yahoo TV , Hannibal mastermind, Bryan Fuller , revealed that he’s weighing several potential avenues for continuing the show now that NBC has officially canceled it. One of those avenues would potentially be a standalone theatrical film. “The idea for Season 4 that we were intending to do could go into a film very easily,” Fuller teases, adding that he “can’t say too much about it, because it will spoil the end of this season.” That, and there are also additional rights issues to sort out, as he currently only has the ability to tell stories about Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham in the television realm. Still, Fuller’s optimism should feed the souls and stomachs of Hannibal devotees worried that the Season 3 finale will also be a permanent end. Fuller also makes it clear that he’d welcome Fannibal support in showing the appetite for more Hannibal, up to and including mailing body parts to the studio.
