In the wake of script leaks and now a rough cut of the first episode of the new series finding its way online, the Beeb has had a lot to worry about with regards to Doctor Who. Still, those who have managed to avoid spoilers got a treat of their own today as the new official trailer for Peter Capaldi’s run on the show arrived online. Clearly looking to deliver the requisite thrills, spills, monsters and madness, the new episodes boasts the return of old enemies the Daleks (and from the sound of it, creator Davros), dinosaurs rampaging through London, weird alien heads, robot creatures and the Paternoster gang – Madame Vastra, Jenny Flint and Strax – back to help this newly regenerated Doc on his adventures. Then there’s poor Clara (Jenna Coleman), confronted with a new man in place of the Doctor she knew, albeit one who is exactly the same person with a fresh body. After meeting him all too briefly at the end of The Time Of The Doctor, and one quick look at him on set still wearing Matt Smith’s old cast-offs, the BBC has now published the first official picture of Peter Capaldi’s 12th Doctor in costume. It’s a classy, sleek look, which still manages to be quirky (is that a cardigan layer we spy?) while being less buy than some of the recent outfits, with just the tiniest touch of Pertwee's Third Doctor, with all the Hammer Horror overtones that suggests. And a Doctor in Doc Martens? We approve. Capaldi, a lifelong fan of the series, is filming now for his proper debut in the autumn. And as for the flourish… Very Doctor-like, even if it also appears he’s trying a magic trick. “He's woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics.
