Oscar Hopefuls Struggle at #BoxOffice

Here's the reason why so many hopefuls have fallen on hard times. Story by Matt Cummings In a year that will go down as the most profitable in box office history, Hollywood is shaking its head over a new problem: the disastrous run of Oscar hopefuls. What seemed like a small issue back in September has become a full-fledged marketing nightmare. From Our Brand is Crisis to Suffragette , audiences have stayed away in massive numbers, even in the face of critical praise. Take Steve Jobs for example. The biopic starring Michael Fassbender has made only $16.7m in 5 weeks, tumbling 65% in its second weekend of wide release. But don't tell critics that: it still enjoys an 85% Rotten Tomatoes rating, making it one of the highest-rated movies of the year. And yet audiences didn't buy it. Movie Review: Everest

Mountain film has a molehill of dramatic stakes. Review by Brandon Wolfe In May of 1996, a large collection of climbers attempted to scale the perilous heights of Mount Everest. Led by expedition leader, New Zealander Rob Hall (Jason Clarke), most of the party were experienced climbers, including Beck Weathers (Josh Brolin) a doctor embarking on a personal mission to climb the Seven Summits, and Doug Hansen (John Hawkes), a mailman who had made a previous run at Everest the year before. Rob’s group also consisted of a journalist, Jon Krakauer (Michael Kelly), on assignment to document the voyage. A parallel climbing party, led by Scott Fischer (Jake Gyllenhaal), forged an uneasy alliance with Rob’s to increase overall safety with greater numbers. Back at base camp is Helen Wilton (Emily Watson), running Rob’s operation from a safer distance, while Rob’s pregnant wife Jan (Keira Knightley) wisely stays home, confident in her husband’s expertise keeping him safe. This is the setup f

Images From "Everest" Starring Jake Gyllenhaal

Continuing his recent trend of looking unrecognisable from one film to the next, this new still from Everest reveals a more hirsute Jake Gyllenhaal than we're used to. Josh Brolin, Jason Clarke and John Hawkes also star in the moutaineering disaster drama, directed by Baltasar Kormákur (Contraband, 2 Guns). The story is of the 1996 events, made famous by Jon Krakauer's book Into Thin Air (already filmed as a TV movie with Christopher McDonald as Krakauer), in which three separate Everest expeditions ran into tragic difficulty in a sudden storm. Eight climbers died. This version of what happened is drawn from more sources than just Krakauer however, including other books and new interviews with the survivors. The screenplay is by William Nicholson (Gladiator, Les Misérables) and newcomer Justin Isbell. Please Leave A Comment- Source- Empire
