Having already filled its upcoming monster universe with A-list talent including Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp and Russell Crowe , Universal is now eyeing another star to revive a famous character. Sources tell Variety that Javier Bardem is in talks to star as Frankenstein in Universal’s classic monster movie series. It’s currently unknown which monster feature Bardem would first appear in. Cruise and Crowe’s “ The Mummy ,” the first film in the monster series, is nearly done with filming. Universal is also developing a “Bride of Frankenstein” feature, but sources indicate that Bardem’s Frankenstein would likely appear in another monster pic first with the possibility of getting a spin-off down the road. With Tom Cruise in the lead, you might think that the new take on The Mummy would have the star power it needs. Apparently not! According to Deadline, Russell Crowe is in talks to join the film. With Alex Kurtzman already at work directing what he and Universal are aiming as the start of the new shared monster movie universe, the film finds Cruise as Tyler Colt, a special forces soldier in the present day confronted with the emergence of a powerful, ancient force (Kingsman's Sofia Boutella is playing the title character). Crowe, assuming he signs on, will play a Dr. Jekyll-type personality (or dual personality, given the character's history) and while Deadline's report says that he's currently only lining up a deal to work on this film, you've got to figure that it'll be a set up for future appearances. A Pulitzer-winning writer ( Crowe ) grapples with being a widower and father after a mental breakdown, while, 27 years later, his grown daughter ( Seyfried ) struggles to forge connections of her own.
