THR is reporting New Line and DC Entertainment are doubling down on comic book hero Shazam ! New Line, which has been for over a decade developing a movie on the long-time DC character, will develop concurrently a movie centering on Black Adam , with Dwayne Johnson attached to star as Shazam’s arch-nemesis. The move stems from last week’s high level meeting with Johnson and DC Films co-head and comics author Geoff Johns, after which Johnson took to social media to promise “hope, optimism & fun.” But on a deeper level, the meeting led to a reconfiguring of the Shazam! movie. Johnson has been attached to play Black Adam since around 2008. Since that time, the actor has become arguably the biggest male actor on the planet. To execs, it made no sense to have a man of Johnson’s stature be just a villain and a supporting character in an expensive tentpole. Thus a decision was made to spin Black Adam into his own film. Adam’s screen take involves him being an anti-hero. And

THR  is reporting NBC has made its first renewal for the 2017-18 broadcast season, and it should come as no surprise. The network announced Wednesday at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour that it has handed out an early second — and third — season pickup to Dan Fogelman's breakout drama This Is Us . Each season will have 18 episodes, fitting since the show revolves around a family of 36-year-olds. “We all got our wish that this is a hit show,” said NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke. “This Is Us is as good as anything we’ve ever had. We’re thrilled to renew it for two seasons and there’s no doubt it will have a long life on NBC. THR is reporting Kenya Barris is teaming up with athletes-turned-producers Blake Griffin and Ryan Kalil for a new version of the 1992 sports comedy. Kenya Barris, the creator of ABC’s acclaimed comedy Black-ish , is teaming with Blake Griffin of the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers and Ryan Kalil of the NFL's Carolina Panthers to develop a remake of the 1992 sports comedy for 20th Century Fox. Barris will write the script for the project, which falls under his overall film deal with Fox that he signed in September. Barris also will act as a producer. Griffin and Kalil are producing via their Mortal Media banner, along with their partner Noah Weinstein.
