Movie Review: #Denial

A monotonously ordinary film about an extraordinary subject. Review by Matt Cummings Let's be honest: the polar ice caps are melting, Elvis is dead, and The Holocaust sadly did happen. But even such an event that saw millions of Jews led to their deaths was actually denied by some in the decades afterwards, and was even the subject of a lawsuit in England. And while that subject should result in serious courtroom drama and important social commentary, Denial is ceetainly not that. It squanders an excellent cast and a high-interest topic in one of the most ordinary and boring films of the year. The NY native and Holocaust professor Deborah Lipstadt’s (Rachel Weisz) becomes the target of a frivolous lawsuit by the crackpot and 'historian' David Irving (Timothy Spall), claiming that Hitler never ordered the gassing of Jews at Auschwitz. His hope is that if he can win this claim in court, the entire argument of Jews being gassed instead of dying in camps fro

Movie Review: #TheAccountant

The Accountant is a wild, whipsmart slap in the face with a ledger. And we're OK with that. Review by Matt Cummings The fall movie season is already shaping up to be far better than this Summer's bomb-fest. Ben Affleck's The Accountant is another welcomed shot-in-the-arm, a wild but intelligent action film that features a great cast, some terrific comedy, and matches our need for amazing violence and solid storytelling. This action-thriller's premise is fairly unique: a high-function autistic child becomes the hugely successful accountant/soldier Christian Wolff (Affleck) who's worked with some of the top bad guys to clean up their books. This draws the attention of retiring Treasury agent Ray King (JK Simmons) and a fellow volun-told (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) who's forced to uncover Wolff's wild past. As he investigates a tech company's suspect books, Wolff soon realizes that his work endangers the life of Dana (Anna Kendrick), the empl

Birth Of The Dragon Trailer

Young, up-and-coming martial artist, Bruce Lee , challenges legendary kung fu master Wong Jack Man to a no-holds-barred fight in Northern California. Set against the backdrop of San Francisco’s Chinatown, this cross-cultural film chronicles Bruce Lee’s emergence as a martial-arts superstar after his legendary secret showdown with fellow martial artist Wong Jack Man. Birth of the Dragon is directed by American writer-turned-filmmaker George Nolfi, director of The Adjustment Bureau , and writer of Ocean's Twelve, The Sentinel, The Bourne Ultimatum and the TV show "Allegiance" previously. Birth Of The Dragon uses a still-disputed private brawl between martial arts masters Bruce Lee (Philip Ng) and Wong Jack Man (Yu Xia) in 1964 as the fuel for a San Francisco-set coming-of-age story involving a rough and tumble young white man [Billy Magnussen doing his best Steve McQueen] who matches the feuding fighting legends in the brawl as he pursues a Romeo and Juliet romance w

Clint Eastwood To Direct Impossible Odds Based On Jessica Buchanan Kidnapping

THR is reporting the drama will be based on the memoir ' Impossible Odds ,' written by Buchanan, husband Erik Landemalm, and Anthony Flacco. After tackling a true-life story with Sully, Clint Eastwood is setting his sights on another: that of kidnapped American aid worker Jessica Buchanan. Warner Bros, Eastwood's longtime home studio, has optioned Impossible Odds, the memoir written by Buchanan, her husband Erik Landemalm, and Anthony Flacco. While it's a beat early in the development stages, Eastwood is looking at it as his next project. Brian Helgeland, who worked with Eastwood on the Oscar-winning 2003 film Mystic River, as well as 2002's Blood Work, is writing the script. Buchanan was working in Somalia when, in October 2011, she and a colleague found themselves caught by land pirates, sold out by their escort and protector. For the next 93 days, she and her co-worker lived in the desert while Buchanan’s husband, Landemalm, tried to work various agenc
