BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

Movie Review: #Boot

The gritty life of LA police comes through in the short Boot . Review by Matt Cummings In Director Brian L. Tan's short Boot , a bitter and burned-out LA police sergeant (Graham Clarke) is on his last assignment, the victim of serving years on the street, when he takes on a young recruit (John Redlinger) who's committed to making a difference. But when the two are engaged in a fire fight, one must make the ultimate sacrifice, leaving the other to share the bad news with their senile and abusive father (Richard Johnson). Tan shoots a competent camera, breathing life into the short with a dark noir edge. He keeps the action tightly focused on his leads, giving an extra edge to an argument between the two cops. When the action starts, Tan lets that run free as well. It's not viseral like Antoine Fuqua's Training Day or Olympus Has Fallen , but it still works. Clarke and Johnson have good chemistry, while Redlinger plays the naive kid cop ala Vince Roman

Movie Review: #Snowden

The story of Snowden is fascinating - this one isn't. Review by Matt Cummings If the film documentary CitizenFour brilliantly raised fear of Big Brother to alarming heights thanks to NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, the new Oliver Stone biopic is meant to add a human face to one of the biggest stories of this decade. Too bad it fails in its mission, because while the topic is compelling, the film itself really isn't. Injured while training to be an Army Ranger, Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) decides to apply for the CIA, instantly winning the approval of his boss and instructor Corbin O’Brian (Rhys Ifans) with his genius-level computer intellect. But Snowden's enthusiasm and early successes are soon marred when he realizes that his own government has been collecting data on every American by using the broadly-powered and redoubtable FISA protocols. For Snowden, the news is particularly devastating when he realizes his girlfriend (Shailene Woodley) is

Movie Review: Blair Witch

Sequel can't see the forest for the trees. Review by Brandon Wolfe WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD The phrase “lightning in a bottle” gets tossed around so often that it’s long since lapsed into musty cliché, but that truly is the best descriptor to apply to 1999’s The Blair Witch Project . That microbudget indie sensation had an immensely transformative cultural impact. It singlehandedly created the modern found-footage horror subgenre, further popularized by Paranormal Activity and its ubiquitous brethren. It still stands as one of the most successful independent films of all time, as well as, for a time, the single most profitable film ever made, from a budget-to-gross perspective. It shook up the horror genre at a time when Scream clones were the law of the land. Hell, it even essentially invented viral marketing, with its elaborate, mythology-building website. But the true legacy of The Blair Witch Project lies with its scrappy ingenuity, its canny ability to weave a spooky c

She's Gotta Have It TV Show Heading To Netflix

She's Gotta Have It helped put Spike Lee on the indie movie map, kick-starting his career and showing what he could do with limited resources and a lot of heart. Now he's turning back to it to launch the first multi-part drama the director has brought to TV, in this case at Netflix. According to the streaming service, the new series will update the original movie while staying true to its tone, following Nola Darling, a Brooklyn-based artist in her late twenties struggling to define herself and divide her time amongst her friends, her job and her three lovers: the cultured model, Greer Childs; the protective investment banker, Jamie Overstreet; and ‘da original B-Boy Sneakerhead’, Mars Blackmon (played in the original film by Lee himself). Lee will direct all 10 episodes and is currently building the cast (which will reportedly be even more diverse than the original) ready to kick off shooting in New York next month. “She’s Gotta Have It has a very special place in m
