#Anomalisa – Movie Review

A reimagined, sluggish, but intriguing view of one man’s descent into madness. Review by Erika Ashley Michael Stone is a business man, author, husband, father, inspirational speaker, adulterer, and madman. While on another business trip to promote his customer service oriented self-help book, “How May I Help You Help Them?” Michael is surrounded by the same faces and voices. Living his life in utter boredom and mundanity he attempts to rile up some kind emotion or passion by reaching out to an ex-girlfriend he wronged 10 years ago. After his first attempt of connection crashes and burns you get a sense that something might actually be wrong with Michael himself. He continues on his evening by taking advantage of a naïve fan with horribly low self-esteem, named Lisa. Michael thinks he’s found his soulmate because she is a true anomaly in his routine existence until she too fades away into the abyss of his mental disarray. First, this film is animated. Movie Review: Anomalisa

Puppets master human flaws in one of the year’s best. Review by Brandon Wolfe Charlie Kaufman has been stamped with the defining label of “weird” ever since his big screenwriting breakthrough with 1999’s Being John Malkovich , and that broad descriptor tends to obscure the searing human streak that runs through his work. Kaufman’s films undeniably skew in oddball directions, but the emotions his characters evince are painfully real. His films almost always center around outsiders grappling with blistering inner torment, trying desperately to make sense of the world they live in and their place within it. A Kaufman protagonist is always adrift, urgently seeking some measure of solace, meaning and understanding. Despite the avant-garde milieus in which they inhabit, they are often some of the most relatable characters in film. Taking his place in the Kaufman ranks alongside the dejected puppeteer of Malkovich , the tortured screenwriter in Adaptation , the lovelorn romantic of Etern

Movie Review: '13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi'

The gripping real-life story also has the stain of Michael Bay all over it. Review by Matt Cummings If you watched with despair and disappointment surrounding the 2013 attack on US bases in Benghazi, Libya you weren't alone. Now 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi has arrived to shake up that bottle once more. And while our leads do a great job keeping the story moving, its director can't deliver his own message without an extreme amount of Michael Bay-ness. Stating that it's an actual 'true story,' 13 Hours unites best buds/ex-military studs Tyrone “Rone” Woods (James Badge Dale) and Jack Silva (John Krasinski) with Dave “Boon” Benton (David Denman) and Mark 'Oz' Geist (Max Martini) as they seek to protect a a poorly-hidden CIA site in one of the world's most dangerous places. From the moment the cash-strapped Silva arrives, the entire nation seems ready for war; but as the foursome will learn, much of that hatred will be focused o

Guillermo del Toro Joins #SCARYSTORIESTOTELLINTHEDARK

Guillermo del Toro joins SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK . Based on the wildly successful trilogy of books by Alvin Schwartz, which included iconic illustrations by Stephen Gammell, the screenplay for the film was written by John August. In addition to potentially directing, del Toro will also produce the film alongside Sean Daniel, Jason Brown and Elizabeth Grave. Alvin Schwartz’s trilogy of short story collections have sold more than seven million copies worldwide, resulting in at least as many nightmares. From the moment the first book was published in 1984, the SCARY STORIES series was one of the most banned from placement by the American Library Association, as the collections were considered to be too scary for children. The ensuing controversy only helped to fuel sales, and the trilogy has remained a cultural phenomenon ever since. Plot details are being kept under wraps so as to not remind people how badly “The Red Spot,” “Harold” and “The Wendigo” traumatized them a
