The Force Awakens director might strike back. By Brandon Wolfe While J.J. Abrams is kicking off the relaunch of the Star Wars franchise with December’s The Force Awakens , he has been conspicuously absent from the announcement for any of the subsequent films announced, be it the regular chapter entries or the spin-offs. Rian Johnson is taking the helm of Episode VIII and was widely speculated to be directing Episode IX as well given that he's also been announced as that film's writer. However, according to Latino Review , the Disney higher-ups are so pleased with what they’ve seen of The Force Awakens that Abrams is now their first choice to direct the ninth episode of the saga. If true, this stands as a major boost of encouragement for what Abrams will deliver later this year. Star Wars: Episode IX is set for release in 2019. Long-awaited sequel won’t be courting the kiddies. By Brandon Wolfe When Mad Max: Fury Road finally speeds into theaters this May, don’t expect it to have its edges sanded down. George Miller’s post-apocalyptic action sequel will not be making the usual franchise concessions to soften things up for a PG-13. THR is reporting that Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez is in negotiations to star opposite Mark Walhberg in Deepwater Horizon , the oil rig disaster drama that Peter Berg is directing for Lionsgate. The story unfolds on Deepwater Horizon, the infamous British Petroleum oil rig that caught fire and exploded on April 22, 2010 while drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 crew members and resulting in the largest offshore oil spill in United States history. Walhberg is starring as an electrician on the rig, and Rodriguez would play the movie’s female lead, the communications officer for the company. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are producing. Deepwater will mark Rodriguez’s biggest feature to date, following her Golden Globe win for best performance in a television series in the comedy/musical category for her work on Jane the Virgin.
