TV Review: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. "Aftershocks"

Series has superheroes now but same old problems. Review by Brandon Wolfe I thought it was getting better. Granted it’s been three long months since the last episode, but I had the faintest recollection of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. closing out its fall run on a minor upswing of quality. But checking back into Marvel’s flagship TV series finds the same collection of problems and shortcomings that have plagued this misbegotten show from the beginning still very much in place. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is trying some new things, sure, but it’s all built upon the same rickety foundation that’s always existed just beneath its floorboards. Yes, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has superheroes (and villains) now. That’s terrific. So did Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. All the eyeless, teleporting “gifteds” in the world can’t shore up the difference when your show is still populated by the same collection of drips spouting the same inartfully overdramatic, hopelessly clichéd dialogue i

Final "Avengers: Age of Ultron" Arrives

Ultron deals it out, but Vision finally arrives in this last trailer. Story by Matt Cummings For those of you who think Avengers: Age of Ultron has been too long in waiting, join the club. But with each new trailer, we get a bit more of the story and characters that currently make up (and will eventually make up) Phase 3's lineup. In the final trailer from Director Joss Whedon, we get tantalizing new clues about who's to join the team, as well as more details about Ultron's plan to overtake humanity. From the looks of things, it appears that Ultron has assembled a far larger army that we've seen previously. But, it also appears The Avengers are ready for the challenge. Among many interesting aspects of the trailer comes at 1:07, in which it appears that a set of Adamantium claws emerge from a person whom we cannot see the face. Is this Wolverine? Of course, Fox owns the rights to Wolverine and the X-men, so it would be an amazing Easter egg if h

Is Best Picture About to Be Changed...AGAIN?

A report suggests that a major course correction might happen. Story by Matt Cummings Six years ago, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences expanded the list of best picture nominees from five to 10, a move that was supposed to shine greater light on more mainstream films and attract a wider audience to root for their favorites. It appears that the experiment has not only failed, but that a surprising reversal might be in store. According to a report by THR , MPAS is considering a move back to the old rules, where best picture would again be limited to five nominees. The change is happening in large part because a significant amount of MPAS members believe the experiment to generate more interest in the Oscars has failed and has actually reduced the prestige of the nomination. TV audiences are apparently driving the decision to make the change. According to new numbers, the 2015 Oscar telecast experienced a 15 percent drop, bolstered by harsh public critici

Jessie T. Usher Cast in Independence Day Sequel

Young actor will try to fill Big Willie-sized hole in sequel. By Brandon Wolfe Jessie T. Usher ( no relation ), star of Starz’s Survivor’s Remorse , has been cast in the upcoming Independence Day sequel as Dylan Hiller, the stepson of Will Smith’s Capt. Steven Hiller. Smith’s pint-sized Fresh Prince co-star Ross Bagley originated the role in the 1996 blockbuster, but will not reprise it (which isn’t surprising since the only acting Bagley has done so far this century is a 2004 episode of Judging Amy ). Director Roland Emmerich revealed Usher’s casting on his official Facebook page , stating “My producing partner Harald Kloser noticed Jessie in between sets of pushups at the gym and gave him an audition. As they say, the rest is history!” Usher will join returning ID4 vets Jeff Goldblum and Bull Pullman for the sequel, which begins production in May for a July 4, 2016 release (20 years to the day from the original’s opening). He will not, however, be joining Smith, who h
