ABC has ordered a pilot for S.H.I.E.L.D , a live-action series from The Avengers writer-director Joss Whedon, Marvel TV and ABC Studios. The project is based on Marvel’s peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D (which stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate or Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division ) found in both the Marvel comic book and feature film universes, including the blockbuster 2012 movie The Avengers, in which S.H.I.E.L.D director Nick Fury , recruits Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and Thor to stop Thor’s adoptive brother Loki from subjugating Earth. S.H.I.E.L.D. will be written by Whedon and frequent collaborators, his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. Joss Whedon also is set to direct the pilot, schedule permitting. Academy Award nominee Vera Farmiga is moving into A&E's Bates Motel . The Up in the Air actress has been tapped to star in the network's Psycho prequel, Bates Motel . From Lost's Carlton Cuse and Friday Night Lights' Kerry Ehrin, the series is inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 classic Psycho and is described as a contemporary exploration of Norman Bates' formative years. It will explore his relationship with his mother, Norma, and offer a look at the backstory that helped forge the infamous serial killer. It's been dubbed a cross between Twin Peaks and Smallville. Farmiga will play Norma Louise Bates , described as a complicated, passionate and compelling woman who is smart, multidimensional and always capable of surprising people. Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Tom Hardy are teaming up to produce an untitled animal-trafficking drama set up at Warner Bros., sources tell The Hollywood Reporter . Hardy came up with the idea, inspired by friends who are former Special Forces operatives and went on to become anti-poaching fighters in South Africa and other nations. The goal, say sources, is to make a movie in the vein of Traffic , Steven Soderbergh’s multistory take on the various impacts of the war on drugs. In this case, the story would look at everything from the ground war on poachers in the African savanna to how animal material ends up in the fashion houses of Paris. It's unclear whether DiCaprio, Maguire or Hardy would act in the movie. A search for a writer has begun. DiCaprio and Maguire are lifelong pals but rarely have worked together, though both are starring in The Great Gatsby for Warners, which is set for release in summer 2013. DiCaprio also is longtime animal-rights activist.

Cobie Smulders , one of the stars of How I Met Your Mother , is in negotiations to join the cast of Starbuck , DreamWorks’ English-language remake of the French-Canadian comedy. Vince Vaughn is starring as a man whose life is turned upside down when he learns he has fathered 533 children through sperm donation. When a few hundred of the children express an irrepressible need to meet their father, he must decide whether to step up and reveal his identity. Chris Pratt is also in the cast. Smulders will play Vaughn’s pregnant girlfriend who has heard of the Starbuck story but has no idea that Vaughn is the man behind the myth.
