What Will Succeed The Wii?

Nintendo on Monday posted a full fiscal-year profit that was down 66 percent and also announced the successor to its hit Wii console, sales of which have been slowing worldwide. Hit by the decline in Wii sales , a strong yen and the disruption to the launch of its 3DS portable console in Japan caused by the March 11 earthquake, Nintendo announced a profit of 77.62 billion yen ($945 million) for the year to March 31. Revenue fell nearly 30 percent to 1.014 trillion yen, following a 22 percent drop last year. This is the second straight year of falling revenue and profit for the Kyoto-based firm, which posted net income of 228.64 billion yen for the year to March 2010, itself a drop of 18 percent. Nevertheless, Nintendo did manage to stay in the black throughout the global slowdown. In a three-sentence statement on its website, media-shy Nintendo announced it "has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii" and that it "will show a playable model of the new

Rio Rules Easter Weekend Box Office

Looks like the combined power of Tyler Perry in a fat suit, the draw of Robert Pattinson and a group of big cats wasn’t enough to challenge animated birds as Rio has continued its box office domination across the world and in the US this Easter weekend. Across the pond, the feathered friends from Fox and Blue Sky earned $26.8 million, bringing the movie’s US total to $81.2 million. Somewhere, we’re pretty certain executives and about to ask what other ideas the Blue Sky team have for Blu and company. Still, Perry won’t be too upset as Madea’s Big Happy Family locked down second place easily with $25.7 million.  Who really watches these movies? Bet he digs the suit and wig out of the closet again soon enough. R.Pattz/Reese Witherspoon romance Water for Elephants , meanwhile, did decent business, taking in $17.5 million for third place. In fourth we find Hop hanging on to a solid level of ticket business, earning $12.4 million after four weeks on release. After that we see Scre

Netflix Largest Subscription Entertainment Business

Netflix is poised to become the largest subscription entertainment business in the U.S. when it reports quarterly earnings on Monday. Analysts are figuring that Netflix will have added around 3.7 million subscribers to its ranks, giving it 23.7 million, give or take 100,000. Even if Netflix is shy of estimates, it will likely show enough growth to propel it ahead of Comcast at 22.8 million video subscribers and beyond the 20.2 million subs at Sirius XM Radi o. Because growth has stalled at Comcast’s video business, it will likely have to settle for being third in this particular contest as Sirius XM and Netflix duke it out for supremacy in the entertainment-subscription arena. Ensuring that Netflix maintains it’s growth – and some analysts predict it will close out the year with north of 30 million subs – is its embrace of digital streaming, where there isn’t much competition yet. Analysis from NPD, in fact, suggests 61 percent of all movies viewed through the Internet are d
