NBC's "Heroes" Most-Pirated TV Show Of 2009

NBC's "Heroes" Most-Pirated TV Show Of 2009 Last year, pirates were obsessed with good vs. evil, making NBC's "Heroes" the most-pirated TV show of 2009. This year, the buzz is that the show may be on the verge of cancellation thanks to dwindling ratings (it averages about 6 million viewers a week, down from nearly 14 million when the show first premiered in 2006). But "Heroes' continues to be a juggernaut in online piracy. According to Torrentfreak, "Heroes" was downloaded 6.58 million times in 2009, topping the year's most-pirated list. The only other show in the top 10 that boasts fewer weekly viewers than total illegal sharers is Showtime's "Dexter," with about 2.3 million viewers and 2.78 million pirated downloads. (And Showtime is a pay cable service, of course.) Here's the full list: 1. "Heroes" (NBC) 2. "Lost" (ABC) 3. "Prison Break" (Fox) 4. "Dexter" (Showtime) 5. &quo

Disney Gets Their Hands Dirty With Stan Lee's Pow! Entertainment

Disney Gets Their Hands Dirty With Stan Lee's Pow! Entertainment As Disney was sealing its deal with Marvel Entertainment on Thursday, it was also expanding its ties with POW! Entertainment, the company led by the man who once ran Marvel and co-created many of its signature characters, Stan Lee. Disney is acquiring a 10% stake of POW! for $2.5 million. It is also acquiring "enhanced rights" to the company's creative side as well as exclusive consulting services. It was not clear what the rights and services entailed or the reason for expanding its relationship with POW! Disney signed a first-look arrangement with POW! in 2007. Although no projects have come to fruition on the feature side, several are in development, including lighthearted mystery tale "Nick Ratchett," action-adventure project "Blaze" and one called "Tigress." POW! is also working on several projects for the home entertainment sector. On Thursday, Marvel stockholders appr

Avatar Tops The 1 Billion Dollar Mark

Avatar Tops The 1 Billion Dollar Mark Twentieth Century Fox's "Avatar" reached a worldwide cume of $1.02 billion through Sunday, leading the most lucrative Christmas season in history. "Avatar" becomes the fourth highest grosser ever, behind James Cameron's "Titanic" ($1.8 billion), "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" ($1.12 billion) and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" ($1.07 billion). "Avatar" should soon eclipse the latter two pics. Over New Year's weekend, "Avatar" grossed an estimated $68.3 million from 3,461 runs at the domestic B.O. -- the best number ever for a film in its third weekend -- for a cume of $352.1 million in its 17th day in release. Overseas, the 3D sci-fi fantasy added $133.5 million for a foreign cume of $670.2 million in 21 days in release. Of "Avatar's" global total, $66.4 million has come from Imax theaters, a record for the large-format

The Thing Prequel To Begin Filming In March

The Thing Prequel To Begin Filming In March The prequel to John Carpenter’s classic horror film The Thing is going to start shooting in March! I have been pretty excited about seeing the potential that his film has. I hope it is realized in a way that lives up to the awesome standards of the original, which is still a freakin' great movie! The Thing prequel is being set up at Universal Pictures and is being directed by a commercial director named Matthijis van Heijiningen Jr. This prequel will dive into the story of how this alien being ended up crashing near the Norwegian camp. The original script was written by Ronald D. Moore and then Eric Heisserer stepped in to do some major re-writes. In an interview back in August he gave a little info on what he and the director did to construct the story. It's a really fascinating way to construct a story because were doing it by autopsy, by examining very, very closely everything we know about the Norwegian camp and about the eve

Things Movie Theaters Don't Want You To Know

Things Movie Theaters Don't Want You To Know 1. "We're obsolete? No way!" Hard to believe, but movie theaters have been holding their own, despite intense competition from cable, the Internet and other media. After a 2005 slump, box office revenue increased over the past few years, and it's likely 2009 will have set a new record. But that growth is due largely to inflation; the number of tickets bought has stayed close to 1.4 billion since 2005, while the average ticket price has climbed from $6.41 to $7.46. Looking for new ways to make money, theaters are exploring options like more in-house advertising and expanded concessions. But the biggest potential lies in digital technology and the flexibility it affords programming. For starters, events like live opera or college bowl games can draw 75 percent capacity on slow days, when theaters are usually "lucky to fill 10 percent of their seats," says Richard Herring, consultant for Davidson Theaters in Virg

After 19 seasons there have certainly been some stand-out personalities. And now, we know exactly which ones are headed back out to try their luck again. And one player from Samoa will be joining them -- need I say who? Just as Rupert Boneham went straight from the Pearl Islands edition into the first All-Stars, the producers recognized right away what a villain they had in Russell Hantz, and the Samoa runner-up was sent right back out to try his luck in an all-villains team. The full "Villains" roster: Tyson Apostol (Tocantins) - smart-ass who hated Sierra Randy Bailey (Gabon) - curmudgeon who hated everyone Sandra Diaz-Twine (Pear Islands) - won without winning a single challenge Danielle DiLorenzo (Panama) - beat Cirie in the final fire-making challenge Russell Hantz (Samoa)
