Vanessa Hudgens has been cast in NBC’s DC Comics comedy pilot “ Powerless ,” Variety has learned. The starring role is Hudgens’ first gig after “Grease Live,” for which she received rave reviews. Based on characters from the DC universe, “ Powerless ” is a workplace comedy set at one of the worst insurance companies in America — with the twist being that it also takes place in the universe of DC Comics. The show is about the reality of working life for a normal, powerless person in a world of superheroes and villains. Hudgens will play Emily Locke, an insurance claims adjuster who loves her job because she gets to help people. The character likes to fly under the radar and just get her work done, and she finds herself increasingly exasperated by the disruptive antics of the various superheroes that proliferate in her city. Last year’s neon-hued, madness-inducing criminal trip Spring Breakers seemed one of the least likely to generate a sequel. And yet that’s exactly what will happen, as backers Wild Bunch have announced that Spring Breakers: The Second Coming is in development. “It’s not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original,” Wild Bunch co-chief Maraval tells Screen International, adding that there will be a blend of cast members from the first film with new actors. The plot finds a group of spring breakers taking on extreme militant Christians who attempt to convert them. Original writer-director Harmony Korine isn’t involved in the sequel, and we’re not sure whether he’s given it his blessing. Spun’s Jonas Akerlund will handle directorial chores, with Irvine Welsh on script duty. The rights to the new movie will be sold at Cannes this year. In a departure from her High School Musical past, Vanessa Hudgens has been set to star alongside Nicolas Cage and John Cusack in Frozen Ground, the Emmett/Furla Films thriller that is being sold here in Toronto, with Voltage Pictures handling international sales. The film, which will begin shooting October 17 in Anchorage, Alaska, marks the feature directing debut of Scott Walker, who wrote the script.
