Top Gun: Maverick Has Begun Production

Here’s some news to take your breath away — Top Gun 2 is finally happening, and it’s in production right now. The sequel to Tony Scott’s 1986 fighter pilot action-drama has been stuck on the highway to the danger zone for years now, but according to Tom Cruise’s social media accounts today is officially ‘Day One’ on the project. The sequel is thought to be titled Top Gun: Maverick, with Cruise returning in that titular role, while Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski is stepping behind the camera (in slow motion, against a hazy orange sunset). Cruise shared a picture on Twitter showing him back in his flight gear, clutching his Maverick helmet (oo-er), with the classic tagline ‘feel the need’. That, obviously, being the need for speed. The sequel is coming from Paramount and Skydance, with Jerry Bruckheimer producing, and a screenplay by Peter Craig and Justin Marks, who have separately scripted the likes of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, The Town, and Disney’s latest Jungle Book. #Itmovie Is Back On Top

Despite his usual power at the box office, Tom Cruise could not overcome a resurgent, scary clown as It rose from the sewer once more to regain the chart's crown in the States after being knocked down last weekend by those Kingsman . The horror movie added $17.3 million to its total, according to studio estimates. The Cruiser's latest, sort-of-true crime tale American Made , wasn't far behind, earning $17.06 million, so there's a slim chance things could change when the final figures come in on Monday. But it appears It has lost none of its drawing power, and that it's not finished snapping records. American Made made do with second place, while Kingsman: The Golden Circle slipped to third on $17 million. The Lego Ninjago Movie actually moved up a place this weekend, earning $12 million. Rounding out the top five was poorly performing thriller remake Flatliners, which was sent to the morgue by reviewers and didn't find much life among audiences, launching

Movie Review: #AmericanMade

Tom Cruise is at his best in American Made . And he never throws a punch. Review by Matt Cummings If many elements behind the biopic American Made feel way too familiar (title cards at the end, news footage, doctored photos showing our hero rubbing elbows), you might also find yourself doing the unthinkable: forgiving Director Doug Liman and Actor Tom Cruise. This is easily one of the best biopic films of the year, fueled by an all-out performance by Cruise, bolstered by a highly stylized feel, and filled with just enough levity to offset what soon becomes a very nasty and gripping affair. Starting in the late 1970's, American Made follows the story of former TWA pilot Barry Seal (Tom Cruise) who decides the drudgery of commercial airlines is less appealing that he imagined, especially when he's courted by the CIA agent Schafer (Domhnall Gleeson) to take low-flying pictures of South American drug lords. Initially very successful, Seal is also recruited by the u

Mission: Impossible 6 New Set Photo

Christopher McQuarrie and his Mission: Impossible 6 cast have been busy globe-trotting as they gather the required footage for the new movie. To celebrate the end of their New Zealand stint, Tom Cruise posted an image of his Ethan Hunt and some of the team to Twitter. Pictured with him are two of the veterans, Simon Pegg's Benji Dunn and Ving Rhames' Luther Stickell, along with Rebecca Ferguson's Isla Faust, who first encountered the team on their last madcap adventure in Rogue Nation and is back for this one. The sixth film (no word on whether it really will be known as M:I6 just to piss off James Bond) has been shooting in Paris and now NZ, with the usual assortment of other places planned and some promised big stunts for Cruise in particular. Come on, as if they can stop him at this point... With McQuarrie once again also on script duty, the movie features returning villain Solomon Lane (played by Sean Harris), familiar faces Julia (Michelle Monaghan), and Alan

Top Gun: Maverick Landing In 2019

Since moving from the long stretch of development hell, with most of us wondering if it would ever actually get made, the Top Gun sequel has been jumping off the deck and shoving into overdrive. Details have been falling into place, and we now know the film, Top Gun: Maverick , is targeting a July 2019 release. With both a title and a confirmed director (Oblivion's Joseph Kosinski is reuniting with star Tom Cruise ), the sequel to the 1986 film finds Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell teaching young hotshot pilots how to do their thing in an age where unmanned drone warfare is becoming increasingly common. We don't yet know if any of his Top Gun cast colleagues will come back for this (Val Kilmer has said he'd be ready to defrost Iceman for the movie), but you never knows... Except Goose, of course. Poor Goose. The script for the movie has been through the hands of Peter Craig, Justin Marks, Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz and the current aim – Stateside

Movie Review: #TheMummy

The competent but underwhelming The Mummy doesn't exactly woo us into Universal's Monster Universe. Review by Matt Cummings When news hit last year that Universal was building a Movie Monster Universe (we'll call it MMU), the idea didn't exactly wow audiences to get behind it. But things seemed to improve dramatically when we heard about the talent that was being assembled: Crowe, Cruise, Depp, Jolie, Bardem. Unfortunately, Universal's first (or perhaps second?) foray into this universe - that being The Mummy - arrives merely as a competent product, but lacks the glory of Iron Man and the power of Wonder Woman in terms of whetting our appetite for a larger story. After 5,000 years of sleep in a mercury-filled burial tomb, the Egyptian Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella) - who murdered her father in an attempt to become Egypt's Pharaoh - is accidentally reawakened by treasure hunters Nick (Tom Cruise) and Chris (Jake Johnson). At the same time, a secret
