Elizabeth Olsen In Talks To Star In Oldboy

Outside of Josh Brolin the casting has not come particularly quick or easy for the Spike Lee directed remake of Oldboy . Brolin locked in as the lead quite early but the quest for a villain so far has involved names ranging from Christian Bale, Colin Firth and Clive Owen . All have passed for various reasons and the search continues. For the female lead both Rooney Mara and Mia Wasikowska have been offered and rejected the part and Twitch has now learned that the role of Marie has been offered to Elizabeth Olsen . The other Olsen sister, Elizabeth seemingly sprang out of nowhere at Sundance 2011 to become one of America's most sought after young actresses thanks to parts in The Silent House and Martha Marcy May Marlene. The Olsen starring Peace, Love & Misunderstanding premiered at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival while she also had a major role in 2012 Sundance pick Red Lights and with three other projects listed to start in 2013 she's not going away

Images From Spike Lee's Red Hook Summer

Just when we think we might have a handle on what Spike Lee has in store for his next film, the director goes and throws another curveball. " Red Hook Summer " has pretty much been kept under wraps thus far, with few details about the film being revealed other than a vague logline about the story centering on a young man from Atlanta who goes to the titular neighborhood to hang with his grandfather, who he's never met, for the summer. But as the Sundance Film Festival draws near, a couple more pics, a full synopsis and an intriguing bit of trivia about who scored the movie has been revealed. Clarke Peters (aka Lester Freamon from "The Wire") leads the cast of mostly unknowns in the film that is being described as a return to the roots of Spike Lee's early filmmaking days, but if you were to tell the director two decades ago that he'd enlist Bruce Hornsby to score one of his movies, he would have said you were crazy. But indeed, Lee seems to have tak

Eddie Murphy To Star In HBO's Marion Barry Biopic

In their latest collaboration, director Spike Lee and writer John Ridley have teamed for an HBO biopic of Marion Barry , with Eddie Murphy attached to play the larger-then-life former Washington D.C. mayor. The HBO Films project, first reported by the Washington Post, is currently in development. Ridley is writing the script based on several pieces of source material, including the 1994 book Dream City by D.C. journalists Harry Jaffe and Tom Sherwood, who will serve as consultants. Lee is on board to direct. The two are executive producing with Murphy. HBO previously developed a Marion Barry biopic a decade ago with Jamie Foxx attached to star and Chris Rock to executive produce, but the project didn’t go forward. Barry, currently a member of the Council of the District Of Columbia, did two terms as a mayor of D.C., from 1979-91 and 1995-99, separated by a six-month stint in federal prison on drug charges that stems from a video of him smoking crack cocaine. Lee and Ridley, who have

Rooney Mara To Get A Starring Role In Spike Lee's "Oldboy"

With Josh Brolin now confirmed for the lead of Spike Lee's remake of Oldboy and the vultures circling Christian Bale for the villain role the question of the moment is who will play the female lead? And sources are telling Twitch that the actress being targeted to play the character - renamed Marie in this version of the story - is Rooney Mara . While we should point out that this has not yet progressed to a formal offer we also point out that when Twitch broke the news about Josh Brolin's potential involvement things were at this precise stage, meaning we have every reason to be confident in our sources here. It is also worth pointing out, of course, that Mara would be a very strong choice. She's not only an actress on the rise - Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo providing a huge boost in name recognition - but she carries the mix of fragility and fearlessness that the part will demand. Should this work out it's a fabulous choice in our books. T

HBO Orders "Da Brick" From Spike Lee

HBO is stepping into the the boxing ring with Mike Tyson , Spike Lee and Doug Ellin . The premium cable network has ordered a pilot for Da Brick , a boxing drama project loosely based on former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson’s early life in the ring. The project hails from Tyson, along with Lee, L.A. Riots' John Ridley, Entourage creator Ellin and his producing partner Jim Lefkowitz. Lee is set to direct with Ridley on board to write and serve as showrunner. It will be set in Newark, N.J., which is often dubbed "Brick City." Much as Entourage was inspired by producer Mark Wahlberg's life, Da Brick will reflect aspects of Tyson's upbringing. It marks the latest in a string of Hollywood projects for Tyson, who has turned up in the Hangover franchise as well as Animal Planet's Taking on Tyson. Last season, he added a cameo on Entourage to his resume. For his part, Ellin has a comedy vehicle with Ed Burns set up at HBO and will wrap up Entour

Spike Lee Explains Why He Has Been Away From Hollywood

Spike Lee is not feeling the love from Hollywood’s money men. “I haven’t made a feature film in three years,”  Lee has lately focused on documentary work with two films about post-Katrina New Orleans for HBO. But he had designs on biopics about Jackie Robinson – the Brooklyn Dodgers slugger who broke baseball’s color line – and soul icon James Brown . And he was in discussions a while back for a sequel to thriller Inside Man , which starred Denzel Washington, Clive Owen and Jodie Foster . But he's been unable to secure financing. “ Inside Man was my most successful film,” he said, adding that he had Washington and Foster on board for the sequel. “But we can’t get the sequel made. And one thing Hollywood does well is sequels. The film’s not getting made. We tired many times. It’s not going to happen.” Lee’s comments came during a free-wheeling Q&A session with public television’s Charlie Rose at PromaxBDA, the annual marketing, branding and design conference here. Lee

Spike Lee Has A "Nagasaki Deadline"

Spike Lee Has A "Nagasaki Deadline" Spike Lee is closing a deal to next direct Nagasaki Deadline , a thriller that will shoot on the East Coast next year. Alcon Entertainment will finance, and partners Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson will produce with Lightstorm Entertainment’s James Cameron , Jon Landau and Rae Sanchini. The film focuses on a troubled FBI agent and his desperate race to thwart two terrorist attacks planned to unfold on American soil. The fed goes beyond obvious suspects to focus on theories that the crime is tied to historical events, as he races against the clock. Given the recent Times Square terror scare, this is risky, hot-button stuff. Creatively, it returns Lee to the fast-paced thriller terrain he covered in Inside Man, which I think was Lee's best film in years. While he delivered a solid hit on budget with three stars--Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster and Clive Owen--studios hardly flooded him with followup offers. While Lee should be

Robert De Niro and Spike Lee Joining Forces with Showtime

Robert De Niro and Spike Lee Joining Forces with Showtime A weird combination. Robert De Niro and Spike Lee , well in one way they are from the same town and have made some great movies over the years. It seems like something good may just turn out. De Niro is great in anything he does and with Lee it is a hit or miss. Quintessential New York filmmakers Spike Lee and Robert De Niro have teamed with Showtime to develop a drama series about Manhattan's Alphabet City. The project, titled "Alphaville," will be written by John Ridley , with Lee on board to direct the potential pilot. It is executive produced by Ridley, Lee, De Niro and his producing partner Jane Rosenthal, whose Tribeca Prods. is on board to produce. "Alphaville" is an ensemble drama chronicling Alphabet City's gritty and tumultuous past before it became the gentrified East Village. Set during the 1980s, it will re-create the neighborhood's eclectic mix of struggling artists and musician
