Movie Review: #Jackie

Jackie is unconventional, uncompromising, and one of the best films of the year. Review by Matt Cummings Jackie is a masterful film. Starkly raw in its depiction of perhaps the worst single event since WWII, it's a remarkably poignant biopic that is largely non-traditional in its format or how it treats its subjects. Powered by an incredible performance from its lead, it vaults to the top of our Oscar choices behind expert camerawork and a sense that our current political machine is headed in the same terrible direction. Still reeling over the loss of her husband John F. Kennedy (Caspar Phillipson), Jaqueline (Natalie Portman) has disappeared to the family's Hyannis Port home, ready to tell her side of the story to an unknown journalist (Billy Crudrup). Told from four different time periods, Jackie relates the horrific moments of the assassination, but orders The Journalist to carefully dictate her words so as assuage the concerns of Americans that she is no

Natalie Portman Is Done With Marvel

Looks like Thor is a single god again. According to Natalie Portman , her time in the MCU is at an end. Jane Foster’s absence from Thor: Ragnarok is likely to be a permanent development. “As far as I know, I’m done,” she revealed in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "I don’t know if maybe one day, they’ll ask for an Avengers 7 or whatever, but as far as I know, I’m done. It was a great thing to be a part of.” Of course, Portman’s astrophysicist has been rather left behind by the evolving state of the MCU. We last saw her in Thor: The Dark World and, although Thor mentioned her at Tony Stark's party in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, she’s inevitably faded into the background since her Norse love interest returned to Asgard. If true, it’s a departure from Marvel’s policy of keeping its players on long contracts, even if she seems to have left the window open for a return down the line. Don’t bet against that Avengers 7 prediction coming true one day, albeit with a dif

Enter For A Chance To Win Passes To See A TALE OF LOVE AND DARKNESS In PHOENIX

Enter for a chance to see A TALE OF LOVE AND DARKNESS  on August 25th at 7:00 PM in PHOENIX. A TALE OF LOVE AND DARKNESS is based on the memories of Amos Oz, growing up in Jerusalem in the years before Israeli statehood with Arieh, his academic father and Fania, his dreamy, imaginative mother. They were one of many Jewish families who moved to Palestine from Europe during the 1930s and 40s to escape persecution. Arieh was cautiously hopeful for the future but Fania wanted much more. The terror of the war and running from home had been followed by the tedium of everyday life, which weighed heavily on Fania’s spirit. Unhappy in her marriage and intellectually stifled, she would make up stories of adventures (like treks across the desert) to cheer herself up and entertain her 10-year-old son Amos. He became so enraptured when she read him poetry and explained about words and language; it would become an influence on his writing for the rest of his life. When independence didn’t brin

International Trailer For Jane Got A Gun Starring Natalie Portman & @joeledgerton1

With its development troubles – including the loss of director Lynn Ramsay and star Michael Fassbender early in the process – now seemingly behind it, Natalie Portman -starring Western drama Jane Got A Gun faces its next challenge: getting bums on seats. Watch the trailer after the Jump... The film’s story finds Portman as Jane Hammond, shocked to see her estranged outlaw hubby Bill “Ham” Hammond ( Noah Emmerich ) stagger home full of bullets after being double-crossed by his gang. With the criminals (led by Ewan McGregor’s Colin McCann) on their way to finish the job, Jane decides to reach out to sharp-shootin’ old flame Dan Frost (Joel Edgerton) for assistance in defending her home. But as you’ll see from the trailer (and we’d add a spoiler alert here for good measure), it won’t be quite as simple as that, with Jane’s daughter Kate kidnapped by McCann and even Dan’s allegiance wavering after an offer to share in the bounty for Bill’s capture. Still, Jane shows herself to

Taika Waititi Offered Thor: Ragnarok

Taika Waititi , who co-wrote and co-directed the vampire spoof What We Do In the Shadows , is in negotiations to direct the third installment of Marvel’s Thor movies, titled Thor: Ragnarok . Chris Hemsworth is reprising his role of the Norse god of thunder. Waititi’s emergence as the choice caps off a round of intense meetings that took place over the last month. Ruben Fleischer, Rob Letterman and Rawson Marshall Thurber were the other directors that were finalists for the gig. Waititi is the latest head-scratcher from Marvel for their pick to direct a big-budget extravaganza, especially one steeped in the Norse mythology and an Apocalypse myth. He wrote and directed episodes of Flight of the Conchords and is a writer on Disney’s upcoming animated feature Moana, which will star Dwayne Johnson. (Fun fact: he appeared with Ryan Reynolds in Green Lantern, the 2011 adventure movie from Marvel’s superhero movie rival, Warner Bros.) Guardians of the Galaxy director James G

First Images From Jane Got A Gun Starring Natalie Portman & Joel Edgerton

It has been infamous for its troubled development and the chaotic start to its shoot, but Natalie Portman and the Jane Got A Gun team will be hoping that 2015 is the year that the Western thriller puts its troubles behind it and stands on its own merits. The first imagery for the film is now online. The film’s story finds Natalie Portman as the titular homesteader, shocked to see her estranged outlaw hubby ( Noah Emmerich ) stagger home full of bullets after being double-crossed by his gang. With the criminals (led by Ewan McGregor ) on their way to finish the job, Jane decides to reach out to a sharp-shootin’ old flame ( Joel Edgerton ) for assistance in defending her home. See all the images after the Jump... This one has faced seemingly endless problems before and even during the shoot. Michael Fassbender left the project early on and director Lynne Ramsay departed on the first day of filming after clashing with the producers. Gavin O’Connor ste

Knight Of Cups Trailer Starring Christian Bale

It feels like we’ve been waiting a long time for Terrence Malick’s latest, but compared to the pauses he used to take between films, a couple of years between To The Wonder and now seems like the blink of an eye. The trailer for the film has now arrived for you to peruse and unpick. It’s very identifiable as a Malick piece: some stark, startling imagery, ruminations on Big Themes and actors being put through their paces. Here, our focus is Christian Bale , a man navigating through the gloss, glamour and gonzo world of Hollywood, but also experiencing its pitfalls. And the synopsis is typically obscure: Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl. But when the prince arrived, the people poured him a cup. Drinking it, he forgot he was the son of a king, forgot about the pearl and fell into a deep sleep. Rick’s (Bale) father used to read this story to him as a boy. The road to the East stretches out before him. Will h
