MGM and Warner Bros. have tapped up-and-coming director Steven Caple Jr. to direct Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone in “ Creed 2 ,” sources tell Variety , with production expected to start in spring 2018. Along with Jordan and Stallone, Tessa Thompson will also return for the sequel, reprising her role as Bianca. Sources also say that Ryan Coogler, who directed “Creed,” is expected to join in an executive producer role, though a deal has not yet closed, as Coogler is currently wrapping up post-production on Marvel’s “Black Panther.” Stallone had considered directing “Creed 2” at one point, but after talking it over with Jordan and the execs, they made the decision to find another director. After a lengthy search, Jordan and Stallone personally picked Caple to take the reins. It’s still not clear what shape the project will take, Warner Bros. is in the early stages of developing a relaunch of The Matrix , the iconic 1999 sci-fi movie that is considered one of the most original films in cinematic history, with Zak Penn in talks to write a treatment. Sources say there is potential interest in Michael B. Jordan to star, but much must be done before the project is ready to go. At this point, the Wachowski siblings, who wrote and directed the original and its two sequels, are not involved and the nature of their potential engagement with a new version has not been determined. Michael B. Jordan will reteam with his Creed director, Ryan Coogler, for Marvel Studios’ Black Panther , inking a deal to join movie's buzzy cast, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. This marks the third time that Jordan will work with Coogler, who is both helming the comic book movie and writing the script with Joe Robert Cole. The first time the director and Jordan worked together was for the indie drama Fruitvale Station. Chadwick Boseman is toplining Black Panther, while Lupita Nyong’o is in negotiations to star alongside him. It is unclear whom Jordan would play, but one source told THR that it could be a villain. Marvel had no comment. Boseman and Black Panther were introduced in Captain America: Civil War, which crossed the $700 million worldwide mark in under a week and a half. The project has no writer or director attached yet for what will be the third adaptation of the 1968 thriller starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway, directed by Norman Jewison. McQueen played a wealthy businessman who was also a robber on the side. When an insurance investigator (Dunaway) begins to track him down, the two get wrapped up in an affair. MGM previously remade the movie in 1999 with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo in the lead roles. The film grossed $124 million worldwide, and received mostly positive reviews from critics. The 1968 original has a 79 percent approval rating from critics counted on Rotten Tomatoes, while the Brosnan version scored a 70 percent rating. Variety is reporting MGM is eyeing a November 2017 release date for the sequel to “ Creed ,” That would allow the film to open exactly two years after the first chapter starring Michael B. Jordan hit theaters. The Warner Bros. release has gone on to gross more than $105 million at the domestic box office and land Sylvester Stallone a Golden Globe for best supporting actor. “That’s my goal,” MGM CEO Gary Barber told Variety on Sunday night at the Golden Globes of his release plan, adding that the date hasn’t been set in stone yet. If the movie does come out that soon, it could mean that Ryan Coogler — who is in talks to direct Marvel’s “ Black Panther ” –might not be able to return as director.
