Kill the Messenger Review: Gritty, Gutsy Thriller Gets Its Hands Dirty

Kill the Messenger largely succeeds at opening old conspiracy wounds. When is the truth too big to tell? 9/11 conspiracies dominated conversation afterwards, but recent history has been littered with one story of government betrayal after another. In Kill the Messenger , we see what was perhaps the first story to go viral, leading its writer to suffer greatly under its torrid but largely unsubstantiated revelations. The film largely succeeds, potentially paving its way to an Oscar invite in February, even if it's a bit short on specifics. San Jose Mercury News writer Gary Webb (Jeremy Renner) is writing stories about government seizures of drug homes in the 1990's, when a much bigger fish presents itself on his hook: for years, the American government has been pumping drugs into ghetto inner-city neighborhoods to fund the Nicaraguan Contra rebels against Communism. Webb can't help himself: a purveyor of the truth, he soon descends into a rabbit hole of contine

Mary Elizabeth Winstead Joins The Cellar

She battled an ancient alien creature in The Thing and, even more impressively, escaped both A Good Day To Die Hard and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter with her dignity largely intact. Now, however, Mary Elizabeth Winstead will have to deal with a nasty kidnapper in The Cellar . J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot team is working this one up alongside the lower budget Paramount Vantage label. Dan Trachtenberg is aboard to direct Josh Campbell, Matthew Stuecken and Dan Casey’s script, which follows a young woman waking up underground following a nasty car accident. Her captor claims to be a rescuer, and reveals himself as a doomsday obsessive who says the world outside has become uninhabitable thanks to a serious chemical attack. But as her worries for her safety start to rise, our heroine must escape and risk whatever lurks beyond the cellar door… Please Leave A Comment- Source- Empire

Our Worst Movies Of 2013. There Are Some Surprises

Our Worst Movies Of 2013  By: MattInRC For every parade of elephants and giraffes that are 2013's top films, there's the janitors who cleanup behind them. Yes, the worst films of the year have brought up the rear, filling our lives with their uselessness and begging the question of why we bothered with them in the first place. These projects might have seemed like good ideas in their infancy but got horribly lost in production, and some of them were probably spoiled from the start, doomed to walk the Earth until the Ghost of Roger Ebert exorcised them to the next realm. To be fair, our index of infamy is based on our own personal standards for taste or interest. We also looked at major Hollywood releases, not those which were shot by independent companies. If A-listers made and distributed it, we considered it. Click on the movie title above each synopsis to read our full review. Films that just missed the cut due to scheduling conflicts (thank you Hollywood for s

THE SPECTACULAR NOW Clip "First Kiss"

We have another clip from the upcoming film. THE SPECTACULAR NOW , opening in NY/LA on August 2 (and nationwide on August 23). With sly humor and an intensity of feeling, THE SPECTACULAR NOW (directed by James Ponsoldt) creates a vivid, three-dimensional portrait of youth confronting the funny, thrilling and perilous business of modern love and adulthood. This is the tale of Sutter Keely ( Miles Teller ), a high school senior and effortless charmer, and of how he unexpectedly falls in love with "the good girl" Aimee Finecky ( Shailene Woodley ). What starts as an unlikely romance becomes a sharp-eyed, straight-up snapshot of the heady confusion and haunting passion of youth - one that doesn't look for tidy truths. The film was written by Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber (500) DAYS OF SUMMER and also features wonderful supporting turns from Brie Larson, Kyle Chandler, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead . The clip features the first kiss between Aim

A Good Day To Die Hard Review. Has The Franchise Run Out Of Fuel?

A Good Day to Die Hard Review By: MattInRC Bruce Willis' return in A Good Day to Die Hard answers another important Movie Question of 2013. And that's not a good thing. Oh, Die Hard franchise where have you gone? To be honest, I stopped following you after the less-than-exciting 1995's Die Hard With a Vengeance . To me, you had run out of fuel, and other action films - other movies that year like Goldeneye and Crimson Tide offered more depth to the action than I had expected. Even your fourth film - 2007's Live Free or Die Hard - got beaten out that year by National Treasure II and Transformers , all signaling that perhaps your best days were over. Thus the Valentines Day release of A Good Day to Die Hard comes as quite a shock to us. Does your once great franchise rediscover its footing and usher Willis back into his old form? Not so much. Police detective John McClane ( Bruce Willis , Looper) learns that his son Jack ( Jai Cortney , Jack

A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charles Swan III Review. It's Very Close To Awful

A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III Review By: MattInRC Does A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III triumphantly signal the return of Charlie Sheen , or does it need more time in rehab? Some films should never be made - we all have our lists of head-scratchers and films we've almost walked out on. Sadly, a new year brings new candidates; and while A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III isn't 2012's That's My Boy or Cloud Atlas , it's pretty darn close. Charlie Sheen (Platoon) plays the titular Swan, a 1970's LA graphic designer whose life is thrown for a loop when his girlfriend Ivana ( Katheryn Winnick , Love and Other Drugs) leaves him after finding a drawer full of pictures of his past conquests. A party animal and womanizer, Swan probably had this coming, since most of his brain power is dedicated to women and sex. While trying to dispose a bag of her shoes by throwing them down a hill, Charlie somehow ends up in

ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER Review By: MattINRC

ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER Review By: MattINRC ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER is a wickedly-fun, over-the-top vampire slashfest that requires total suspension of disbelief. The world of historical fiction has been the subject of many classic novels, which use real historical time periods but fictional characters and situations to tell its story. In those worlds, reality is skewed just enough to make its existence in the real timeline plausible. Novels like Horatio Hornblower, I Claudius, and Patrick O'Brien'sMaster and Commander series were all eventually made into movies that experienced varying levels of success. But the movie  ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER  is different, existing in a highly-stylized world of ultra-violence and slow-motion edits, but told from the perspective of an actual historical figure. Taken from the novel by author Seth Grahame-Smith (who also wrote the screenplay), Hunter is historical fiction on steroids, requiring total suspensio
