TV Review: Sherlock: The Abominable Bride

The eternally dormant series goes back in time. Review by Brandon Wolfe The increasing high-profile ubiquity of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman has been hard on poor Sherlock . The BBC detective series is going on six years from its debut in 2010 and has only aired a measly nine episodes over the course of three seasons. So rigorous are the demands of the stars’ careers (including major upcoming Marvel gigs for both Cumberbatch and Freeman ) that their schedules only allowed for a single episode to be produced within the past year, with a full fourth season still far off on the horizon. That special, Sherlock: The Abominable Bride , is going to have to tide us over for awhile before we settle back into another arduously long wait, the natural state for Sherlock fans. The Abominable Bride sets itself up as an alternate-universe what-if, a glimpse at what this modernized incarnation of the Sherlock Holmes mythos would look like played straight and restored to Arthur Conan

TV Review: Fargo "Waiting for Dutch" (Season 2 Premiere)

Has the FX series still got it? You betcha. Review by Brandon Wolfe Fargo , FX’s expansion of the Coen Bros’ modern film classic, was last year’s greatest surprise. There was every reason to look at the series askance prior to its debut. The film, with its unique blend of “aw, jeez” Minnesota geniality and blood-in-the-snow violence, seemed impossible to duplicate without simply standing as a facile duplication. Even with a top-shelf cast, featuring Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton, it was hard to imagine the show amounting to anything more than a misguided curiosity, a fool’s errand to recapture something too idiosyncratic to replicate. The bar was set too high to clear. Forget it, series creator Noah Hawley, it’s the Coen Brothers. Yet Fargo did the impossible. It carved out its own niche, telling a story that meshed with the Fargo house style while being uniquely its own thing. Hawley spoke fluent Coen without seemingly like a mere impressionist. The unlikely resu

'Sherlock Christmas Special' Scene Released

We learn new details about the upcoming BBC episode. Story by Matt Cummings For those who haven't yet checked out the BBC series Sherlock , it's probably time you did. The series which cemented Actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as superstars follows Sherlock Holmes on modernized adaptations of the books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The latest episode, tentatively titled The Christmas Special , now features the clip below. As you can see, show co-runner Stephen Moffat has taken Watson and Holmes back to Victorian England with Watson donning quite a mustache. Check out the video and read more afterwards: It's clear that the team has missed a step since exiting season 3 , with Cumberbatch wearing the hat and cape quite well. Freeman's mustache, the fun bantering with Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs), and Cumberbatch's "That’s the trouble with dismembered country squires: they’re notoriously difficult to schedule” reminds us why this short ser

Two More Characters Join 'Captain America: Civil War'

Learn below which two Marvel heroes will be joining the superhero beatdown! Story by Matt Cummings It's becoming clear that Marvel's kickoff to Phase 3 - Captain America: Civil War - doesn't only feature The Star-Spangled Man, but will be host to a growing number of characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Over the past few months, we've learned that Hawkeye , Black Widow , and Falcon will join Cap and Iron Man as they battle over the Superhuman Registration Act. Yesterday saw actor Martin Freeman sign on to play an unknown role . That list got a little bigger today, when it was announced that both Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and Black Panther (Chadwick Bozeman) will also appear. The film will mark Bozeman's first as Black Panther, while Rudd's Ant-Man will enjoy a second appearance. The movie will apparently only follow a limited amount of the original comic plot, where an international incident forces both Cap and Iron Man to choose sides reg

Martin Freeman Cast in 'Captain America: Civil War'

The Hobbit actor's role has yet to be revealed. Story by Matt Cummings Actor Martin Freeman has been to The Shire, solved mysteries on the streets of London, and will now jump headfirst into a Civil War. According to a press release on Marvel.com, Freeman has signed on to play in next year's Captain America: Civil War . While his specific role is unknown, Marvel had this to say about Freeman's signing: "From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in 'The Office,' Martin's range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us," said "Captain America: Civil War" Producer Kevin Feige. "We couldn't be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Celebrated for his roles in "Sherlock," "Fargo," the “Hobbit” trilogy, and much more, Freeman has earned one Primetime Emmy® Award and one BAFTA Award, both for his portrayal of Doctor John

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Review: Tired Goodbye to Middle Earth

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is an uninspired goodbye to Middle Earth. When Lord of the Rings arrived in the dreary year of 9/11, it set the standard for big epic battle scenes, wowed us with every beautifully-shot sequence and sequel, and even inspired a generation of filmmakers to outdo it. And yet, as its architect Peter Jackson delivered two prequels, The Hobbit has done something I could never have imagined: they became bloated, predictable, and even bored. Sadly, The Battle of the Five Armies does nothing to alleviate those concerns, displaying its true colors of drab and disappointment. With the dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch) released to destroy Laketown, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and his Dwarf allies must deal with a new problem: the dragon madness which is about to consume their leader Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Caught between Thorin's increasingly brutal demands and the arrival of the Elvenking Thranduil (Lee Pace), Bilbo

The Golden Globes Are Announced

Who got left out of this year's nominations? We have your guide after the jump! The Golden Globes are always a bit of a mixed bag - Johnny Depp for The Tourist! Angelina Jolie for The Tourist! - but this year things are mixed in a different way, with no clear leader dominating the field. No single film stands above the rest when it comes to nominations, although Boyhood picked up nods for Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. Then again, Grand Budapest Hotel also did well, as did Into The Woods and Gone Girl. Notable by their absence are Unbroken, American Sniper and Interstellar, as is Peter Dinklage for his sterling work on Game Of Thrones. Also, no Sons Of Anarchy , or Orphan Black , or Outlander , or... well, the list goes on. Below are our key picks of nominees, but for the full list, including more TV and music-based nods, head over to the Golden Globes' official website, where all is revealed (IN BLOCK CAPITALS
