After seven installments, the trap-happy Saw franchise finally drew to a close in 2010 with its 3D Final Chapter . Since then there have been regular whispering of what studio Lionsgate might be planning to do with the property: the assumption being that, while it had run its initial course, there was still some sort of life in the series. Pitches have come and gone, but six years on, Saw 8 (or VIII, if you prefer) is now officially in development. It has a title - Saw: Legacy - and a pair of screenwriters in the Piranha films' Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger. Saw , of course, began in 2004 with James Wan's now classic, self-contained, low-budget ordeal. Not an obvious candidate to spawn six sequels, it nevertheless managed just that, with writer Leigh Whannell continuing through the next two, and Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan picking up the story for the rest. According to Deadline Up-and-coming Brit actor Taron Egerton is in early talks with Lionsgate to star in Robin Hood: Origins as Sherwood Forest’s most famous son. The negotiations have just started and a deal might not make but Egerton, who put in a star-making performance in Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service , is clearly top of the list for the project. Ironically, the success of Kingsman — a sequel to which is expected to get greenlit by Fox — may lead to scheduling issues, but Egerton has rapidly established himself as one of the UK’s most muscular young leading men. While it looked like Lionsgate might be pulling ahead in the rush to make a film about the April 2013 bomb attack on the Boston Marathon with news of Jake Gyllenhaal mulling the lead, CBS Films is countering by closing in on a deal for Peter Berg to direct Patriots’ Day . According to Variety , he’s in final negotiations to make the film, which would be another real-life tale after Lone Survivor and the upcoming Deepwater Horizon . And, assuming the actor/producer actually makes a deal himself, it would also mark Berg’s third film in a row with Mark Wahlberg , who has been trying to help get the movie made for a while, but might have to duck out of a lead role if scheduling becomes an issue. Second sequel to the granddaddy of found-footage may finally materialize A second sequel to the 1999 indie-horror phenomenon The Blair Witch Project might be forthcoming. Lionsgate has picked up Alpha , a sci-fi project that sees Robopocalypse author Daniel H. Wilson teaming up with Brad Pitt and his Plan B banner. Anthony Scott Burns, a Canadian filmmaker, is attached to make his feature debut with Alpha , which Pitt would produce with his Plan B partners Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner. Wilson came up with the original idea and will write the screenplay. Details of the project are being kept secret, but it is known to be sci-fi survival story that has shades of Jack London, the author behind such tales as White Fang and The Call of the Wild. Part of the pitch involved a fake commercial, shot by Burns, for a fictional company that is central to the story. Wilson is the author behind books with a robotics bent, such as How to Survive a Robot Uprising and Robogenesis as well as Robopocalypse, which Steven Spielberg came close to adapting.
