Movie Review: #Silence

Two Jesuit priests seek to find their mentor who has disappeared in hostile 17th Century Japan. Review by Matt Cummings It can be argued that Director Martin Scorsese has earned the right to make whatever film he wants. His filmography reads like a mini-AFI list. Unfortunately, his 25-year long passion project Silence emerges as an over-wrought, frustrating, and frankly arrogant middle finger while even eroding its own message with logic that makes all the sense to someone who long abandoned his faith. After the Portguese first arrived on the Japanese mainland in the mid 16th Century, the leader Tokugawa Ieyasu responded by waging a protectionist holy war against priests and their followers. Widespread evictions and persecutions of Japanese Christians are witnessed by the helpless Father Cristovao Ferreira (Liam Neeson), whose plight stirs the conscience of the kind Jesuit Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield). Together with his fellow Jesuit Father Garrpe (Adam Driver), Ferreria

Movie Review: #AMonsterCalls

The well-intentioned A Monster Calls is a horribly-flawed Oscar wanna-be. Review by Matt Cummings For those of us who have witnessed the premature death of a parent, the story behind A Monster Calls should be a cathartic experience. Instead, its dark themes feel way too much for young people to handle and its "seen that before" experience will fall on older deaf ears. A Monster Calls tells the story of 12 year-old Conor (a thoroughly entertaining Lewis MacDougall) who is befriended by an ancient living tree (voiced by Liam Neeson). The only reason why this incredible event is happening is that Connor is witnessing the slow death of his mother (a merely adequate Felicity Jones), while his separated father (a completely misused Tony Kebbell) visits from far-away LA. Conor is tormented by a terrible dream of losing his mother, which sets the tree off to teach the boy a lesson about letting go. Through a series of three beautifully-rendered watercolor-styled st

Vera Farmiga To Star In The Commuter

Having fended off wandering spirits and demonic nuns for The Conjuring 2 , Vera Farmiga is ready for an even more imposing challenge: going toe to toe with Liam Neeson . It's going to take more than a crucifix to keep her safe in The Commuter . The thriller, which regular Neeson-wrangler Jaume Collet-Serra is gearing up to make, sees the actor as a businessman returning home from a day's work who unwittingly gets caught up in a criminal conspiracy that threatens not only his life, but that of those around him. Farmiga is aboard to play a mysterious woman who drags him into the whole affair, offering an enticing opportunity, but one that comes with some deadly downsides... Writers Byron Willinger and Phil de Blasi cooked up the concept and the producers snagged Neeson's services last year, with Serra following a few months later. Now it's gearing to shoot this summer and the director is gathering the cast. Farmiga has recently worked on indie comedy Boundaries and

Liam Neeson Will Star In Order Of Disappearance Remake

According to deadline Liam Neeson is set to star in a remake of the hit Norwegian film In Order Of Disappearance , to be directed by Hans Petter Molland, helmer of the original that debuted to acclaim in Berlin in 2014. Frank Baldwin is writing the script. Neeson will play the protagonist role originated by Stellan Skarsgard . He’s a snowplow driver who doesn’t get worked up about much, until his son is murdered and it is made to look like an overdose, by criminals involved in drug deals. It turns the mild-mannered man’s attention from snow to body removal and becomes a tense action thriller with Dirty Harry-esque intensity, where bad guys pile up like snow drifts when the killers suspect a rival gang. The remake is being re-imagined to take place in a U.S. resort like Aspen with a different set of ethnic rivals than the Euro version, so Neeson’s character stays behind the wheel of the snow plow. Neeson is prepping to star in the Peter Landesman-directed Felt, playing former F

Clive Standen Cast As Bryan Mills In Taken

Deadline is reporting that Taken , NBC’s straight-to-series adaptation of the hit movie franchise, has cast its lead, tapping The Vikings co-star Clive Standen to play younger Bryan Mills, the character portrayed in the movies by Liam Neeson . Written and executive produced by Alex Cary (Homeland), who serves as showrunner, the Taken TV series is a modern-day prequel to the film franchise that depicts how Bryan Mills (Standen) developed and sharpened his particular set of skills. EuropaCorp TV USA and Universal Television are producing. British actor Standen has been playing one of the central characters, Rollo, on History’s hit drama The Vikings, which is currently airing its fourth season, with a Season 5 renewal expected soon. Standen is segueing to Taken after completing has obligations on the History drama, filming the two 10-episode parts of Season 4. I hear his character is not being killed off, so there is a possibility for him to appear in Season 5 as a guest star. H

First Look At Liam Neeson & Andrew Garfield In Scorsese’s "Silence"

Here is our first proper look at Liam Neeson & Andrew Garfield in Scorsese’s Silence . Adapted by Gangs Of New York’s Jay Cocks from Shûsaku Endô’s novel, Silence has been a passion project of the director’s for years. It follows two Jesuit priests – Garfield and Adam Driver – who go looking for their mentor (Neeson) in 17th century Nagasaki, Japan, and encounter violent persecution. “Being raised an Irish Catholic myself, the subject of faith and Catholicism struck very deeply home” Neeson said during a preview for the film at the 4th Annual Los Cabos International Film Festival. “The question in the film is: Is there a god? We’re all in some way asking ourselves that all the time. What is the purpose of life? What is faith? Why have faith? Why do we wake up in the morning and get out of bed? It’s as basic as that and the film asks all these questions and dramatizes them in a very exceptional way.” The rigors of the characters meant the cast had to lose weight for th
