THR is reporting Jason Mitchell , the young actor making a breakout with his portrayal of rapper Eazy-E in Straight Outta Compton , is in negotiations to join the cast of Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island . The move will reunite him with Corey Hawkins , his Compton co-star (he played Dr. Dre) who is already cast in the monster movie. Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Toby Kebbell are also already on the manifest of the ship that takes a crew of explorers to the mysterious, creature-laden isle that is also the home of Kong, the king of the apes. Insiders say that Mitchell will play an easy going pilot. Jordan Vogt-Roberts is directing the big-budget project, which last week brought on screenwriter Derek Connolly for rewrites as it heads toward a late-October production start in Hawaii. Universal revised its opening figure up as the musical biopic grabbed a big slice of the audience. Turns out that Straight Outta Compton did even better at the North American box office this weekend than Universal originally estimated. While the studio predicted a weekend box office of $56.1 million on Sunday morning, on Monday it revised that number to a whopping $60.2 million. The film opened to $24.1 million on Friday, including its Thursday night screenings; it corralled $19.3 million on Saturday and took in an extra $16.8 million on Sunday. The film now stands as the fifth best August opening ever, narrowly surpassing M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs, which opened to $60.1 million in 2002. Universal’s R-rated Compton, the biopic about the groundbreaking hip-hop group N.W.A, produced for just $29 million, posted a best-ever opening for its director F. Gary Gray. Review by Brandon Wolfe Partway through Straight Outta Compton , the biopic of hip-hop/gangsta rap pioneers N.W.A, the group is about to play a packed-house show in Detroit. Members of the Detroit Police Department have instructed the group of a laundry list of things they are forbidden to do during the show, the biggest of which is that they are not allowed to perform their hit song “F*ck Tha Police” under penalty of arrest. Taking to the stage, the group appears for a time to abide by the edict, but ultimately refuses to kowtow to authority and defiantly belts out the song. When the police attempt to shut them down, a riot begins to break out and the group is cuffed and tossed into a police van as the crowd turns on the arresting officers. Two relative unknowns are set to tackle the roles in the long-gestating Universal project. After more than five years, four writers and a tough-to-please trio that holds cast and script veto power, Universal's N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton is finally getting the green light.
