Though the project has been on the mat more than once, boxing drama Southpaw is following Chumbawumba's advice by getting knocked down, but getting up again. The Wrap reports that Jake Gyllenhaal is now in talks to star. Olympus Has Fallen director Antoine Fuqua is still attached to direct the film, which, if he actually signs on to star, will see Gyllenhaal as a left-handed pugilist who wins a big title, but suffers a tragedy shortly afterwards. Dan Gilroy will make his directorial debut on the project, for which Sierra/Affinity will handle international sales at the upcoming Cannes Film Market. Jake Gyllenhaal will star as a freelance L.A. crime reporter, in Nightcrawler , which will mark the directorial debut of screenwriter Dan Gilroy. Rene Russo is set to co-star in the movie. Sierra/Affinity will handle international sales on the project at the upcoming Cannes Film Market, with WME Global and CAA representing North American rights. Filming will begin in late October. Gilroy most recently co-wrote the screenplay for The Bourne Legacy with his brother Tony Gilroy. Tony Gilroy and Jennifer Fox, who collaborated on Michael Clayton, Duplicity and the Bourne series, will produce along with Gyllenhaal. Now that he’s fully on board, director Denis Villeneuve is wasting no time making sure that thriller Prisoners finally makes the leap from in-development buzz project to fully functioning feature film. He’s now looking to get a recent collaborator aboard, with Jake Gyllenhaal in talks. Gyllenhaal and Villeneuve must’ve gotten along while they were shooting indie thriller An Enemy this year, as the director has targeted the actor to play a detective investigating the kidnapping of a young girl and her best friend in a small town. Gyllenhaal had apparently been considering the movie before he met Villeneuve, but hadn’t made a final decision. If he locks in a deal, Gyllenhaal will go up against Hugh Jackman, the distraught father of the girl, who takes matters into his own hands by kidnapping the man he thinks is responsible.
