22 Jump Street is the tenth-highest-grossing movie of the year at the domestic box office–and the highest-grossing movie of the year to feature no superheroes, transformers, monsters, apes, LEGOs, or Maleficents. Unsurprisingly, Deadline reports that Sony is working on a Jump Street threequel (a possibility that 22 Jump Street teasingly joked about.) The studio has hired writer Rodney Rothman, who was one of the four credited writers on 22 Jump Street. Hangover alum Ken Jeong has joined the cast of Universal’s Ride Along 2 , joining returning leads Ice Cube and Kevin Hart in the cop comedy sequel to this year’s $153 million hit. Tim Story will direct and Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay are writing the script. Cube and Matt Alvarez will produce for CubeVision alongside Will Packer for Will Packer Productions and Larry Brezner. MGM is in talks with Ice Cube to star in and produce a third “ Barbershop ” movie after a decade-long hiatus. The project will also be produced by Cube’s producing partner Matt Alvarez, Bob Teitel and George Tillman Jr. The original 2002 film, directed by Tim Story and set in Chicago, starred Cube and Anthony Anderson. The 2004 sequel “ Barbershop 2: Back in Business ,” featured the same cast with Kevin Rodney Sullivan directing. The two “Barbershop” films combined for about $140 million in worldwide box office. It's been almost ten years since the last instalment, but Ice Cube and New Line are apparently keen to revive the slacker Friday franchise. The first Friday was a stoner comedy released in 1995. Who he will be playing is still unknown as of now, but with time I am sure it will be leaked out. The film directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), the big screen adaptation stars Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube, Brie Larson, Rob Riggle, DeRay Davis, Dave Franco and Jake Johnson . Based on the Fox series that ran from 1987 to 1991, the movie will center on two undercover cops ( Hill and Tatum ), who are assigned to work in schools. Disney is negotiating to finance and distribute Chrome and Paint , a gritty Boyz N' The Hood-style drama that Ice Cube will direct and star in, based on a script he co-wrote with Eva Vives. The film is a drama about the custom car culture of South Central Los Angeles. Cube will produce with his Cube Vision partner Matt Alvarez. Cube, who directed the 2010 Oakland Raiders documentary Straight Outta L.A. for ESPN, hasn't directed a narrative feature since 1998's The Players Club , which he also wrote. In Chrome and Paint, Cube uses the subculture of tricked out Mercedes, BMW and Low Rider cars to frame a drama about the temptation to place materialism above all else. Jonah Hill is in talks to make his feature directorial debut on The Kitchen Sink , the Oren Uziel script for Sony Pictures about the unlikely alliance between a high school-aged vampire, zombie and human as they try to save their town from invading aliens. The script was a top choice on the recently released 2010 Black List. Matt Tolmach is producing, and it was one of the first projects his company acquired after he left his executive job and jumped right in to produce the Spider-Man reboot with Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad. Hill is hot stuff at Sony, co-writing 21 Jump Street , and co-starring in the transfer of the Fox TV drama alongside Channing Tatum and Ice Cube , with Phil Lord and Chris Miller directing.
