Variety is reporting “ Blockers ”, John Cena is in talks to star in Universal Pictures’ “ The Janson Directive, ” with Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia executive producing through their Seven Bucks Productions. The novel follows a former consular ops agent who, after leaving covert operations due to the high number of sanctioned serial killings, goes into business as private security consultant. Teamed with a sharpshooter, Janson only takes assignments that he believes will lead to helping those in need. Johnson announced the casting on his social media outlets, praising his long friendship with Cena that goes back to their classic WrestleMania match. The action-thriller was originally being developed with Johnson attached to star, but sources say given his busy schedule, Johnson and the studio decided it was best move along with Johnson as a producer. As Universal guns the engine on the first planned spin-off from the Fast & Furious franchise, the studio has pinpointed the person it wants to wrangle Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham for the film. John Wick and Atomic Blonde director David Leitch is directing the film. It makes sense that a film featuring the two would demand a director who has proven they can bring action scenes to life, and Leitch – who moved from stunt co-ordination and second unit work to co-direct the first Wick with Chad Stahelski – has certainly shown he's got the flair for it. Chris Morgan has written the script for the new film, which doesn't yet have a name, but should boast Johnson's Luke Hobbs and Statham's recently redeemed Deckard Shaw on their own mission, minus any candy asses. Universal wants this one in cinemas for July next year, and so it needs the wheels to hit the road quickly. Leitch's most recent job was directing Deadpool 2, which opens in the UK on 16 May

Having had to take second place to Star Wars: The Last Jedi in its first couple of weeks on release, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle took advantage of a quiet early January weekend to leapfrog into first, earning $36 million according to studio estimates. That's an impressive feat for the film, which has been scoring well with audiences and earning a solid $244.3 million in the States (and taking in a global total of $519.3 million). And given the film's success so far, that could point to sequel potential, assuming Dwayne Johnson has any time in his schedule within the next decade. Last Jedi couldn't even settle for second this weekend, also losing out to new horror sequel Insidious: The Last Key. The latest instalment of the scare franchise took in $29.2 million, a good result given its typically thrifty $10 million budget (at least before marketing is taken into account). Talk of a a shared movie universe based on Hasbro's toy properties has been ongoing for years, but the conversation hasn't obviously been accompanied by much action. The Transformers franchise has battled on, obviously, but the G.I. Joe films never reached anything like those heights at the box office. Nevertheless, Paramount has finally just announced a release date for G.I. Joe 3 , along with the inevitable Dungeons & Dragons reboot, a Micronauts movie, and something mysterious... G.I. Joe will be with us on March 27, 2020, with Micronaut s following on October 16 the same year. Dungeons & Dragons hits on July 23, 2021. And Untitled Hasbro Film arrives just over two months later on October 1, 2021. Three years ago there was talk of the next G.I. Joe being directed by D.J. Caruso, with a writers room being led by Akiva Goldsman. Whether any of that's still in place is unclear. It seems unlikely that Channing Tatum or Dwayne Johnson will be involved.
