Having had to take second place to Star Wars: The Last Jedi in its first couple of weeks on release, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle took advantage of a quiet early January weekend to leapfrog into first, earning $36 million according to studio estimates. That's an impressive feat for the film, which has been scoring well with audiences and earning a solid $244.3 million in the States (and taking in a global total of $519.3 million). And given the film's success so far, that could point to sequel potential, assuming Dwayne Johnson has any time in his schedule within the next decade. Last Jedi couldn't even settle for second this weekend, also losing out to new horror sequel Insidious: The Last Key. The latest instalment of the scare franchise took in $29.2 million, a good result given its typically thrifty $10 million budget (at least before marketing is taken into account). Talk of a a shared movie universe based on Hasbro's toy properties has been ongoing for years, but the conversation hasn't obviously been accompanied by much action. The Transformers franchise has battled on, obviously, but the G.I. Joe films never reached anything like those heights at the box office. Nevertheless, Paramount has finally just announced a release date for G.I. Joe 3 , along with the inevitable Dungeons & Dragons reboot, a Micronauts movie, and something mysterious... G.I. Joe will be with us on March 27, 2020, with Micronaut s following on October 16 the same year. Dungeons & Dragons hits on July 23, 2021. And Untitled Hasbro Film arrives just over two months later on October 1, 2021. Three years ago there was talk of the next G.I. Joe being directed by D.J. Caruso, with a writers room being led by Akiva Goldsman. Whether any of that's still in place is unclear. It seems unlikely that Channing Tatum or Dwayne Johnson will be involved.

Jaume Collet-Serra has been set by Disney to direct Dwayne Johnson in Jungle Cruise . This means that Collet-Serra will withdraw from Suicide Squad 2 , the Warner Bros sequel for which he was top choice. After directing a bunch of hit movies that included last summer’s sleeper The Shallows , Collet-Serra has been poised to take that step to star filmmaker, and numerous studios chased his next slot. He decided that the opportunity to originate a new Indiana Jones-like action-adventure franchise in lockstep with one of the most globally bankable film stars — like Gore Verbinski did with Johnny Depp in The Pirates of the Caribbean — was a better opportunity than continuing a storyline originated by another director. Production will begin late next spring. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but like Pirates, Jungle Cruise is based on the classic theme park attraction that takes guests on a guided tour through the rivers around the world. Having spent the last couple of years navigating the thorny politics of House Of Cards , Neve Campbell is clearly ready for some more straightforward action. She's now willing to risk life and limb (on screen at least), as she's joining Dwayne Johnson in action thriller Skyscraper . The new movie reunites The Rock with his Central Intelligence director Rawson Marshall Thurber. Johnson is playing a former FBI hostage rescue team commander (and war veteran, just in case his heroic credentials were in any doubt) who has segued into advising on security for giant skyscrapers. While on assignment in China, he discovers that one of the towering buildings – seen as the tallest, yet safest building in the world – is suddenly an inferno and someone is framing him for the fire. It was smooth sailing to the top spot at the box office for " Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ," but the waters were choppier for the Dwayne Johnson comedy " Baywatch ." Studio estimates on Sunday say the fifth installment of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise commandeered $62.2 million in its first three days in theaters. The Johnny Depp-starrer is projected to take in $76.6 million over the four-day holiday weekend. It was the second-lowest domestic opening for the nearly $4 billion franchise, but the latest film, which cost a reported $230 million to produce, has massive international appeal. Review by Brandon Wolfe For a television series that was, at the peak of its heyday, the most popular show in the world, Baywatch has had a surprisingly shallow cultural footprint. Maybe it’s not that surprising. It was a show built around watching Pamela Anderson and other beach beauties (and David Hasselhoff, if you’re into the carpet-chest thing) run around a beach in slow motion. That slo-mo running, with the accompanying heaving bosoms jutting out of tight red one-pieces, is almost certainly the only thing anyone has retained of Baywatch , whether they were an avid viewer or not. Perhaps that’s all there ever was to retain. Given the source material’s paucity of substance, the creators of the new Baywatch movie have decided to go the same spoof route that the film version of 21 Jump Street rode to great success.
