The future imagined by Director Paul Verhoeven during the 1980's and 90's is almost as frighteningly real compared to the one we really got. Science Fiction has become today's fact, but it's more intrusive than we'd like, living up to the promise of a far more dangerous than we had hoped; but it was these ideas and almost vicious bloodsport presented in 1987's Robocop which have defined a generation of Sci-Fi/action films. American Hustle Review By: MattInRC David O. Russell's American Hustle is smart, savvy, and an Oscar contender waiting for the call. With so many films this year about double-crosses, you might have become desensitized for them around Summer: Iron Man 3, 2 Guns, The Counselor and at least 5 more all explored the concept, each with mixed results. The problem with the genre is its propensity to get so convoluted that the story leaves audiences wondering if they had just been fleeced of their hard-earned cash. Luckily, best of the them - David O. Russell's American Hustle - comes out just in time to right the ship for Oscar season. When we first meet the 1978 con-artist Irving Rosenfeld ( Christian Bale ), he's engaged in a serious combo-over, readying himself for the biggest swindle of his life. Arrested by the FBI for fraud, he and faux-British sidekick Sydney ( Amy Adams ) are strong-armed into catching New Jersey politicians who are taking bribes.

Hollywood is in the business of making entertainment that sometimes finds itself in bed with mirror images of itself. Captain Phillips Review By: MattInRC The overly-long Captain Phillips loses your attention and only tacitly gains it back. The Somali pirate pressure-cooker Captain Phillips is less a story about the attempted theft of a cargo ship in 2009, instead treading into dangerous water about American values and our military supremacy. But the story of the American Richard Phillips ( Tom Hanks ) - who's later kidnapped by four desperate boys with machine guns - is simply too long, sacrificing effect for buildup. Phillips is the hard-working no-fuss captain whose home life is filled with worries about his children and the fact that his wife ( Catherine Keener ) doesn't like him taking jobs so far away. She has reason to worry, as the Somalis in 2009 were pirating ships with such frequency that US destroyers were sent out to patrol the African coast.
