THR is reporting 20th Century Fox has set a Feb. 14, 2019 release date for Gambit, the X-Men spinoff starring Channing Tatum . Fox's Deadpool opened to big numbers over Valentine's Day weekend in 2016. Gore Verbinski is directing the film, which will see Tatum star as the New Orleans-based mutant with the power to manipulate kinetic energy and whose weapons include a staff and a deck of playing cards. The film has been in development for some time, with Verbinski coming on board last week following departures of filmmakers Rupert Wyatt in October 2015 and Doug Liman in August 2016. Gambit has a script by Josh Zetumer and is produced by Tatum, Reid Carolin, Simon Kinberg, Lauren Shuler Donner. The Gambit release date comes as Fox has been expanding its X-Men properties on the big screen, with 2018 seeing the release of New Mutants (set to open April 13), Deadpool 2 (June 1) and X-Men: Dark Phoenix (Nov. 2). The white-trash hilarity of Logan Lucky makes for a wonderful viewing experience. Review by Matt Cummings Ah, White Trash where have you been in 2017 movies? Back in June, Brian Grazer told the world that he was still working on a new version of classic Tom Hanks/Daryl Hannah comedy Splash , but with a twist. Disney is now developing the idea, with Channing Tatum and Jillian Bell in the lead roles. According to Deadline, the twist is that Tatum will be the sleek aquatic creature and Bell as the everywoman from the land who falls for him. Bell, who worked with Tatum in 22 Jump Street and has several writing/producing credits to her name, reportedly developed the idea into a pitch and Disney took the bait. Grazer and Imagine partner Ron Howard (who directed the original) are on as producers, with Marja-Lewis Ryan writing the script. It's still in the early stages at the moment, and could yet change, but the gender-swap sounds might work to make the reboot feel a little fresher, and was actually part of a script that Imagine bought that featured the Merman's point of view... The latest Coen Brothers' comedy misses the mark but still manages to look and sound great. With so many superhero movies due in the next couple of years, it is inevitable that some release dates will change. Often this is to avoid clashes with rival studios, but occasionally it is simply because the films won't be finished in time. This now seems to be the case with the Channing Tatum -starring Gambit . The X-Men spinoff was originally scheduled for an October 7, 2016 release, which would make it the third of three X-Men movies that Fox were releasing next year. However, producer Simon Kinberg has confirmed that Gambit won't even start shooting until next spring, making a 2016 release impossible. In an interview with Collider, Kinberg discussed the search for a new director, who has since been identified as Edge of Tomorrow's Doug Liman . With thudding inevitability, Fox's release-date reshuffle has seen X-Men spin-off Gambit pulled from its original release date of October this year. A new slot for the Channing Tatum -fronted superhero vehicle hasn't yet been announced. This is not necessarily bad news for the film; in fact it's eminently sensible. With original director Rupert Wyatt departing the project last September, and his replacement Doug Liman only coming aboard in November, October 2016 was never looking realistic. It turns out that 11-month turnaround really was too tight. Gambit now has time to come together properly, and with Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse both out this year, we're hardly deprived of X-Men to tide us over. Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner remain producers on Gambit, which Tatum has been chasing for some years.
