The Hateful Eight is a torrid, exceedingly violent, and thrilling dance. Review by Matt Cummings Depending on your circles, Director Quentin Tarantino is either a brilliant and influential filmmaker or an over-the-top potty mouth who violates every social convention with his exceedingly violent fare. For me, I'm somewhere in the middle, ready to quote Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction but aware that he sometimes goes too far at the expense of his work. If you find yourself standing in the latter corner, you're going to despise The Hateful Eight for its excessive runtime and unnecessary violence. But if that's the case, you shouldn't have bought a ticket to this visceral throwback that's as crass and ugly as anything we've seen this year. With original director Rupert Wyatt departing the project two months ago, it was looking as if the X-Men spin-off Gambit may not make its planned release date of October next year. Channing Tatum 's superheroics should now be back on schedule, however, with Edge Of Tomorrow director Doug Liman in final talks to step aboard. Liman already has a strong relationship with Fox having made Mr & Mrs Smith and Jumper with the studio to solid box office results. He’s also, clearly, experienced with both big name talent and effects. Gambit is not his first brush with a Fox/Marvel project either: he was on the shortlist to direct The Wolverine after Darren Aronofsky dropped out. That gig was ultimately won by James Mangold. Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner remain producers on the project, which Tatum has been chasing for some years. THR is reporting Director Rupert Wyatt has fallen off Gambit , the Channing Tatum X-Men spinoff being made by Fox. Changing script caused the film's budget to be larger than expected, extending the shoot, and prompting the push. Another source said that the shooting schedule around Mardi Gras caused the reshuffling. Either way, it became a conflict for Wyatt, who had to exit. "I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Channing and the team at Fox, but regrettably a push in the start date now conflicts with another project," said Wyatt in a statement. "I thank them for the opportunity, and I know that Gambit will make a terrific film." The movie project is an important one for the studio, which is hoping that it launches onto the screen as an important character as Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, one of the lynchpins of the X-Men universe. According to THR Lea Seydoux has received an offer to star in Gambit , 20th Century Fox’s X-Men spinoff movie, opposite Channing Tatum . Rupert Wyatt, who directed Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes , will direct the film. Josh Zetumer penned the script for the film, based on a treatment by Gambit co-creator Chris Claremont. Tatum, Reid Carolin, Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg are producing. Seydoux just has an offer at this point, so there's always the possibility that it won't make. But if it does, she'll play the head of the Assassin’s Guild, a woman named Bella. Gambit, centering on the card-throwing superhero who can manipulate kinetic energy, is slated for release Oct. 7, 2016. Seydoux is known for her work in Blue Is the Warmest Color, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Saint Laurent. Gambit may not pay off for actor. By Brandon Wolfe The Wrap has reported that Channing Tatum is planning to exit 20th Century Fox’s X-Men spin-off Gambit , which was scheduled to begin production this fall for a planned release on October 7, 2016 . No reason has been given for this sudden development, but a source claims that Tatum’s reps are still in discussions with the studio to try and rectify the situation. If Tatum does walk away from Gambit , it will be a major turnaround, as the film was something of a pet project for the actor, one he took to Comic Con earlier this month to promote. Director Rupert Wyatt will have precious little time to find a new leading man or risk the project falling apart. THR is reporting that Lizzie and Wendy Molyneux , writers on animated comedy Bob's Burgers , have signed on to work on Sony's female-centric 21 Jump Street project. The sisters are the second writing team to board the project. Sony also has brought on Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs, who are working on Comedy Central’s buzzy Broad City. The studio liked a pitch from the Molyneux sisters, so it is moving forward with dual-track development, in which both writing teams are working on separate scripts for the comedy. The 21 Jump Street franchise, starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, has done strong business for Sony. The first two films have grossed more than $530 million worldwide. Sony also is planning a third installment in the Tatum-Hill franchise called 23 Jump Street, with Rodney Rothman writing the script. Sony is brewing two female-centric spinoffs of its previous films.
