First thing to note is that music. Like Romeo + Juliet , Luhrmann has opted for contemporary musical picks, arguing that he's following the author down a path of pop innovation. “Fitzgerald described contemporary music in his books,” he points out. “People would say, ‘Why have you put all this silly jazz pop music in there?’" Nothing silly about a musical line-up that's been overseen by Jay-Z and includes Mrs Z - Beyoncé - André 3000, Lana Del Rey and Florence And The Machine. The 'green light' track towards the end of the piece indicates that the text has been a guiding influence for the score as well as the movie. The new trailer for Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby has splashed down in a riot of style and a little more substance on how his 3D interpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel will play out. The focus this time is firmly on Leonardo DiCaprio's mysterious millionaire, Jay Gatsby. Soundtracked again by Kanye and Jay-Z's 'No Church In The Wild', we see him speeding his banana yellow Duisenberg through New York, Tobey Maguire's wide-eyed Nick Carraway in tow, shaking hands, scratching backs and pulling off shady deals that keep him in shirts, champagne and spectacular parties. There's more of Meyer Wolfsheim, a shadowy figure inspired by real-life Jewish gangster Arnold Rothstein, played here by Bollywood great Amitabh Bachchan. As packages firm up for AFM, here’s one that will surely reverberate in Santa Monica. Robert Pattinson is signing on to star with Carey Mulligan in Hold On To Me . The film will be directed by James Marsh, who won an Oscar for the docu Man On Wire and followed with Project Nim. Pic is based on a true story about a femme fatale who with her boyfriend kidnaps and ransoms the town’s richest man. They bury him in a box and things go horribly awry. Pattinson plays the flashy supporting role of the woman’s life love, Jimmy, who isn’t involved in the crime. The project was scripted by Brad Ingelsby. Alexandra Milchan is producing with Indian Paintbrush‘s Steven Rales, Mark Roybal and Michael Pruss. Also producing is Todd Field, who originally developed the film to direct but stepped off to helm Creed Of Violence for Cross Creek. The Nicholas Sparks adaptation factory keeps on chugging. Word arrived last year that Lasse Hallstrom, who just delivered Salmon Fishing In The Yemen , had signed on to direct Safe Haven , based on the author’s book. He’s reached the casting stage and Variety reports that Josh Duhamel will be getting romantic for the movie. Life Or Something Like It writer Dana Stevens has punched out the script, which finds a mysterious young woman arriving in a small North Carolina town and having difficulty settling into the tight knit community. Whispers and rumours spring up about her past, but things begin to change when she kicks off a relationship with a widowed storeowner (Duhamel), who has been busy looking after his two young children. Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley have both been linked to the female lead, but the job currently has a vacant sign hanging off it. He's not long completed his turn as Dean Moriarty in Walter Salles' On The Road, but it seems Garrett Hedlund can't get enough of that crazy beat culture. He's now in talks to join the Coen Brothers' enigmatic Inside Llewyn Davis . The specific role under discussion is unclear, as is much about this project. But given that the film is something to do with the Greenwich Village folk scene of the 1960s, we might surmise that Hedlund's musical chops, proven in Country Strong , make him a good fit. And he's got a reasonable-sized gap in his schedule now, what with Akira's tactical retreat. Shocking, unexpected, raw, explosive, would be some of the first things that come to mind. I for one did not expect director Steve McQueen and actors Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan would push the envelope that much but they did and they did it so well. Never have I seen the subjects of obsession and addiction depicted on screen in such a brutally honest manner. Now the Coen brothers think he’s right for their next project, and the writing/directing/producing duo have offered him one of the lead roles in Inside Llewyn Davis . Set in the developing folk music scene of 1960s Greenwich Village in New York, the movie will follow the struggles of the title character (Oscar Isaac), a talented musician who inspires others yet can’t seem to make enough playing gigs. Co-written by McQueen and John Ridley, Slave will tell the true story of New Yorker Solomon Northrup ( Chiwetel Ejiofor ), who was kidnapped from Washington’s streets in 1841 and shipped off to become a forced labourer. He was eventually rescued from a cotton plantation in Louisiana in 1853. There’s no word yet on exactly who Fassbender will be playing, though we expect great – and, given the pair’s usual subject matter – controversial things.
