The Impossible's Juan Antonio Bayona has now been confirmed as directing the Jurassic World sequel . Bayona was welcomed to the project by Colin Trevorrow and producer Frank Marshall via Twitter. Trevorrow, who co-wrote and directed the latest outing for the Jurassic Park franchise which became a billion-dollar hit last year, opted not to sit in the director's chair again, preferring to make The Book Of Henry and prepare for an even bigger gig shooting Star Wars: Episode IX . But he's been involved with developing the new World, writing the script alongside regular collaborator Derek Connolly (who worked with him on the first). Bayona inherits stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt for a film that will, if all that has been said about it so far is to be believed, will expand the scope to see even more dino action in places beyond Isla Nublar. Jurassic 5 opens June 22, 2018. By Brandon Wolfe Given its record-breaking runaway success, Universal is not about to allow another 14 years to pass before heading back to Dinoland, as the studio has carved out a June 22, 2018 release date for the follow-up to Jurassic World . Director Colin Trevorrow will write the script for the next installment, but will not return to the director's chair. However, stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will be booking their return engagements. Jurassic World now stands as the third-highest grossing film in history, worldwide. Currently, nothing else is set for that date in June 2018, but that May will bring Avengers: Infinity War Part I , The Lego Movie Sequel and the Han Solo solo film . When Jurassic Park premiered in 1993, audiences were amazed at what eventually became the next great leap in CGI: believable prehistorics being chased by humans who effectively argued against man interfering with nature. Two disappointing sequels and two decades later, the sequel/retconned Jurassic World arrives, sparring no expense to return the franchise to respectability. And while it satisfies in the simplest way possible, its story gaps, good (not great) CGI, and decent performances keep it from wiping off the mud of its shunned brethren. It would appear that Michael C. Hall is allergic to dragons. Actually, there isn’t a given reason why he’s decided to leave the new Pete’s Dragon film, but it means good news for Karl Urban fans as the Star Trek actor has stepped in to replace him. Ain’t Them Bodies Saints director David Lowery is busy putting the new version of the story together, working from a script he co-wrote with Toby Halbrooks. It’s Disney’s latest attempt to conjure a fresh take on one of its catalogue titles, this time the live-action/animation-blend 1977 film which saw a young lad befriend a magical dragon. The new movie will apparently deviate from the original, not by having the dragon turn evil and go all Smaug on the local town, but by stripping out the musical element and injecting an environmental message into the story. Check out the first full trailer re-welcoming a long-lost franchise. One of the mainstays of movie time in the 1990's Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park introduced audiences to the world of dinosaurs run amok. It was also one of the first computer-generated films to feature animals completely made in the digital realm. When it was re-released in 2013 in 3D, it was like the series never left (read our review here). When it premiered in 1993 to strong praise and box office success, the door seemed open to an every-three years slew of dinosaur fright. In subsequent years, the franchise saw two sequels that were financially successful but failed to match the excitement generated by the original. Bryce Dallas Howard is in early talks to play the female lead in Disney’s “ Pete’s Dragon ” reboot. Robert Redford is also in talks to star with Oakes Fegley playing the title character. David Lowery is set to direct from a script he wrote with Toby Halbrooks. The story is a reinvention of the 1977 film that revolves around Pete and his best friend Elliot, who happens to be dragon.
