Director John Lee Hancock has been brought in to work on Maleficent , Disney's big-budget live-action retelling of the Sleeping Beauty tale that stars Angelina Jolie . Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the movie is about to get a round of reshoots. Hancock, who wrote and directed The Blind Side and wrote Snow White and the Huntsman , penned several new scenes to be shot. Hancock also will help oversee the reshoots by the film's director, Robert Stromberg, a production designer making his directorial debut on the $200 million-budgeted fantasy. "We asked him to be on set," producer Joe Roth says of Hancock. "He's not directing. He wrote pages, and I hired a first-time director, and it's good to have him on set." Asked why a film of this magnitude was entrusted to a novice director, Roth notes that Stromberg won Oscars for production design on Alice in Wonderland and Avatar. Garrett Hedlund is set to star alongside Jack O’Connell in Universal’s biopic, “ Unbroken . Angelina Jolie is helming the film with the Coen brothers doing the latest pass on the script. Earlier drafts were written by William Nicholson and Richard LaGravenese. Pic is based on the Laura Hillenbrand book “ Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption ,” that follows the true story of Lou Zamperini who was a Los Angeles high school track star who raced in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. In 1943, his Air Force plane crashed in the Pacific. He survived without food and water for 47 days, enduring shark attacks, aerial attacks and hunger before washing ashore on a Japanese island behind enemy lines, where he was held as a prisoner of war for two years and tortured by his captors. Juno Temple will play one of the three pixies taking care of Aurora in the live-action Disney fantasy film that re-imagines the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale. Angelina Jolie is playing the title character in the fantasy that tells the story from the point of view of the fairy-witch who cursed Aurora to a permanent sleep on her 16th birthday. Robert Stromberg is directing. Elle Fanning already is on board as Aurora and Sharlto Copley is Stefan, the half-human and half-fairy bastard son of the human king. Also in the cast are I melda Staunton (Vera Drake), Miranda Richardson (Harry Potter), Kenneth Cranham (Made in Dagenham), Sam Riley (Brighton Rock) and Lesley Manville (Another Year). Temple would join Staunton and Manville as the three pixie fairies in the classic fairy tale who are tasked with taking care of Aurora in the cottage in the woods. Sharlto Copley is in negotiations to play the male lead opposite Angelina Jolie in Disney’s Maleficent . He will play King Stefan in the live-action film, which tells the backstory of Sleeping Beauty and why the evil fairy (played by Jolie) cursed Princess Aurora in the first place. The film is scheduled to come out March 14, 2014. The news comes on the heels of Copley joining Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego’s Open Grave and closing his deal to play the villain in Spike Lee’s Oldboy, a remake of Park Chan-wook 2003′s Korean revenge thriller. Disney has tapped Robert Stromberg to make his feature directorial debut on Maleficent , the Linda Woolverton-scripted revisionist take on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale that is being constructed as a star vehicle for Angelina Jolie to play the villainess. While Stromberg is new to the director’s chair, he is no stranger to dealing with big-ticket spectacle films. He has been production designer on Avatar and Alice In Wonderland, and Disney’s upcoming Oz The Great And Powerful. He also worked on visual effects for such films as 2012, Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End and Master And Commander. Joe Roth is producing. This gives Disney feature heads Sean Bailey and Rich Ross another tentpole feature to complement the Marvel product, with A-list talent. Derek Haas and Michael Brandt are feeling Wanted all over again. The screenwriting duo have been tapped to work on Wanted 2 for Universal, which is developing the sequel to the hit action movie starring Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy . The 2008 movie, directed by Timur Bekmambetov , was based on a comic mini-series by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones and centered on a disillusioned office worker who discovers his father was part of a secret society of super-human assassins. Brandt and Hass wrote the screen story and shared screenwriting credits with Chris Morgan. The movie grossed $341 worldwide, so it wasn’t long before Universal put a sequel into development. But finding a story proved harder to crack. Morgan was commissioned to work on the project back in the fall of 2008. In 2009, Evan Spiliotopoulos was brought on board before the project quietly faded away. Now Haas and Brandt will move the Wanted 2 needle forward, based on Spiliotopoulos’ work. I was very much surprised by the film Salt , and with the film grossing around $300 million worldwide it's no surprise that Sony Pictures is moving forward on its much speculated Salt sequel. Kurt Wimmer has begun writing it for Angelina Jolie to reprise her role as Evelyn Salt, the CIA agent who spent the first movie running for her life after being outed as a Russian spy. The studio smartly left open a window for a possible sequel at the climax of the original, which was directed by Phillip Noyce. Now, Universal Pictures tried to draft a sequel of Wanted and it didn't happen. This is different. Jolie wants to do the Salt sequel if it comes together right.
