Universal Books Return Voyage to Jurassic World

Jurassic 5 opens June 22, 2018. By Brandon Wolfe Given its record-breaking runaway success, Universal is not about to allow another 14 years to pass before heading back to Dinoland, as the studio has carved out a June 22, 2018 release date for the follow-up to Jurassic World . Director Colin Trevorrow will write the script for the next installment, but will not return to the director's chair. However, stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will be booking their return engagements. Jurassic World now stands as the third-highest grossing film in history, worldwide. Currently, nothing else is set for that date in June 2018, but that May will bring Avengers: Infinity War Part I , The Lego Movie Sequel and the Han Solo solo film . What this ultimately means is that Chris Pratt will be ruling Hollywood for years to come. Discuss this story with fellow SJF fans on Facebook . #JurassicWorld Takes A Bite Out Of The Avengers

The Universal tentpole passed up ' The Avengers .' Talk about bite. Universal and Amblin Entertainment's Jurassic World has hit $1.522 billion at the global box office, eclipsing The Avengers ($1.520 billion) to become the No. 3 movie of all time behind Avatar ($2.788 billion) and Titanic ($2.186 billion), not accounting for inflation. Jurassic World, directed by Colin Trevorrow, has earned $614.3 million domestically, becoming only the fourth film to ever cross $600 million. Its overseas haul is $907.3 million. The box-office sensation stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Universal has yet to announce plans for Jurassic World 2, but a sequel is all but guaranteed. Please Leave A Comment- Source- THR

#BoxOffice Report: 'Ant-Man' Wins Tiny Weekend; 'Trainwreck' Surprises

Even an original Avenger can't bring home the ants. Story by Matt Cummings Marvel Studios can breathe a sigh of relief (sort of), as their record of 11 consecutive #1 openings remains intact. But while Ant-Man won the weekend with an estimated $57.23 million, the box office celebration is sure to be short. That's because early hopes of $65m fell as Friday turned to Saturday, led by 'seen that before in Iron Man ' comments. By the time it was done, the Paul Rudd heist comedy had barely beaten 2008's The Incredible Hulk , which holds the lowest opening among the 12 Marvel Studios films at $55.41m. Coming in at number 2 was Minions , which took it on the chin, plunging 57% to $49.27m. And that number was boosted by a ridiculous 4,300 theater count, which means it could have slid even further had it gotten the typical 3,100 treatment. The highly-anticipated Universal/Illumination Entertainment spin-off suffered from both poor reviews and perhaps la

#BoxOffice Report: Machines, Strippers Fall, 'Inside' Outperforms

Post-apocalyptic machines and strippers lose out in July 4th Weekend bust. Story by Matt Cummings Early numbers are coming in from this week's domestic box office, and it doesn't look good for two movies with high expectations from their studios. It appears that Pixar's Inside Out will finally take the number 1 slot from three-peater Jurassic World , leaving Terminator Genisys and Magic Mike XXL in the dust. With hgh praise from critics and even talk of whether it deserves an Oscar nod for Best Picture, the movie about a little girl's emotions will take in an estimated $30 million over the three-day weekend. It's already made over $225m and on Friday seemed ready to exert its influence over Mike and Terminator . Coming in at a close number 2 is Jurassic World , which should take in $28-29m. Considering its staying power, there's no reason why a last-minute surge could see the two slip-flop, attesting to the popularity of both. That leaves

2015 #BoxOffice Mid-year Report

How has the 2015 box office performed compared to 2014? Read on to find out. Story by Matt Cummings From late 2014, critics and writers were ready to proclaim the 2015 box office as the most successful in history. We too felt a certain sense of destiny, with so many great films arriving throughout the year. We even wrote about it here , here , and here . Then January arrived, and one dud after another came with it, including Blackhat , Mortdecai , The Boy Next Door , and Project Almanac . February was actually worse, with Jupiter Ascending and Seventh Son dropping stinking loads at our door before running off. But within that mire of disaster, we also saw great films, including Paddington and Kingsman: The Secret Service , both of which kept many theaters from turning into mausoleums. You can read our QUARTER 1 REPORT here . As we pass the half-way mark of 2015, it's time to compare this year's box office to 2014, and to determine if everyone was right ab

Movie Review: 'Jurassic World'

The return of dinosaur destruction satisfies but doesn't sustain. Review by Matt Cummings WARNING: Major spoilers ahead. When Jurassic Park premiered in 1993, audiences were amazed at what eventually became the next great leap in CGI: believable prehistorics being chased by humans who effectively argued against man interfering with nature. Two disappointing sequels and two decades later, the sequel/retconned Jurassic World arrives, sparring no expense to return the franchise to respectability. And while it satisfies in the simplest way possible, its story gaps, good (not great) CGI, and decent performances keep it from wiping off the mud of its shunned brethren. After the disastrous events of Isla Nubar in the first film, The Disneyland-like world of Isla Nubar is now replete with happy genetically-spliced dinosaurs of every kind, creating a safe (if homogeneous) experience, with children riding mini-Triceratops and a Sea World-inspired demonstration of a Mosasau

See Six Minutes of 'Ant-Man' at IMAX's 'Jurassic World'

We explain why this announcement makes total sense to Marvel. Story by Matt Cummings Marvel's Ant-Man is entering its last month of marketing, with trailers and select images already released. But the buzz for its actual release hasn't been as strong as for other Marvel films. Audiences are either not sure about the character's importance to the MCU, or they've still worried about Edgar Wright's departure affecting the film. Therefore, it comes as little surprise that Marvel - always the showman, even in the face of possible defeat - is upping their Ant-man game by releasing six minutes of the film with Jurassic World (IMAX only) this weekend. We're not sure if this footage will appear after the weekend, but its appearance achieves two important goals: it brings in the curious who might not have a stated interest in Jurassic World but are curious about Ant-man , and shores up Marvel's (perhaps) wavering interest in the film. It's an

Jurassic World On Track For $100 Million Opening

Dino sequel might be summer's only dino-sized opening. By Brandon Wolfe Deadline reports that Universal’s Jurassic World , opening June 12, is tracking for a domestic opening weekend of between $100-130 million, roughly in line with Man of Steel ’s opening gross of $116 million. Awareness for the film is presently in the 90% range, higher than San Andreas , which opens next week. Interestingly enough, though Jurassic is one of the summer’s earlier releases, it could be one of the last films of the summer to gross more than $100 million in its first three days. Only Universal’s other big summer release, Minions , is expected is join that club. Though there are other big films in the pipeline, the Terminator and Mission: Impossible franchises have, historically, not performed to that level straight out of the gate, and Marvel’s Ant-Man isn’t expected to do traditional Marvel-sized business. Spielberg and Trevorrow Looking Ahead To Next Project

Collaboration Continues With “Intelligent Life” Story by David Clark Steven Spielberg and Colin Trevorrow , the brains behind Jurassic World, are teaming up again on a new project titled Intelligent Life. At this time details are still limited but it would appear that Spielberg and Trevorrow have developed a solid working relationship and want to carry that into a new intellectual property. What is known about the movie thus far falls within the science-fiction genre and is loosely based upon an incomplete Trevorrow project titled The Ambassador. How true the new movie will be to this earlier project is still unclear. The Ambassador was never made but the plot involved an alien first-contact specialist who falls in love with a unique woman who is not of this world. Originally planned as a sequel to his successful indie movie Safety Not Guaranteed , Intelligent Life will likely be quite a departure from Jurassic World for Spielberg and Trevorrow. Other indivi

Steven Spielberg Hoping to Direct Chris Pratt Indiana Jones Reboot

Indy may change, but the director stays the same. By Brandon Wolfe It sounds like if and when recently crowned King of Hollywood Chris Pratt decides to take over the fedora and whip from Harrison Ford for an Indiana Jones reboot, he might have Indy’s old guiding hand helping with the transition. Sources tell Deadline that, depending upon the script being up to snuff, Steven Spielberg hopes to direct Pratt’s inaugural outing as the intrepid archaeologist. It’s still far too early in the game for any celebration to begin, however, as no formal work has yet begun on the project. But considering how integral Spielberg has been to the entire series from the beginning (the dreadful fourth film notwithstanding), it’s encouraging to hear that he is eager to oversee the next phase of the franchise. Given that Spielberg personally selected Pratt for his starring role in the upcoming Jurassic World , it would seem that the director is as high on the actor as everyone else. Discuss t

Chris Pratt Eyed for Indiana Jones

Star-Lord possibly taking over the whip. By Brandon Wolfe In his continuing bid to take over Hollywood, if not the world, Deadline reports that Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt is being groomed by Disney to take over the Indiana Jones franchise in the future. Pratt would inherit the role of the iconic archaeologist from Harrison Ford, though Deadline urges that it’s still very early in the planning stages. Disney has yet to comment on the rumor, but after his starmaking turn in Guardians , Pratt is on fire. Next up for the actor is June’s Jurassic World , another Spielberg franchise he’s taken over, then The Magnificent Seven remake with Denzel Washington and, of course, Guardians 2 . Pratt taking over Harrison Ford’s signature role seems fitting since he’s on track to become this generation’s Harrison Ford anyway. Discuss this story with fellow SJF fans on Facebook . 2015 Big Movie Questions

Read on to learn why 2015 could be the most profitable year for Hollywood ever. Story by Matt Cummings With 2014 in the books - and a new slate of films already being released - we're continuing a tradition here at SJF by looking forward to the big movie questions of 2015. And while last year provided us with entertaining answers to the questions we posed back in January, 2015 looks to not only have just as many, but could be the most profitable year ever. Without any fanfare whatsoever, we now present the Big Movie Questions of 2015. Who will make more money: Avengers or Star Wars? It's a foregone conclusion that 2015 will be one of the biggest years for the box office ever. With interesting titles throughout the year, it's clear that Hollywood has saved its collective mojo for one big push. But there's always a top dog, someone who makes the most money after a fierce competition. Think 2012's Avengers vs. The Dark Knight Rises . This year, it&#

The Force Awakens Is The Most Anticipated Film Of 2015

It's likely not a surprise to most people: According to a survey by Fandango, Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens is the most anticipated film of 2015. Also making the list are Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron , Lionsgate's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 , the adaptation of EL James' Fifty Shades of Grey and Jurassic World . The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams, will hit theaters Dec. 18, 2015. It stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson and Max von Sydow, along with original stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill. In its survey of more than 1,000 fans in the last week of December, Fandango also found that Jennifer Lawrence of Hunger Games fame was once again the female fan favorite, while Robert Downey Jr. topped the list for males. Star Wars actress Ridley is the breakout actress of the year, while Fifty Shades actor Jamie Dornan topped the male breakout star list. Most Antici
