Star Wars: Episode VIII , originally scheduled for release on May 26, 2017, will now debut on December 15, 2017. The move follows the extraordinary success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens , which was the first Star Wars movie to premiere in December. Abrams is kicking off the relaunch of the Star Wars franchise with December’s The Force Awakens , he has been conspicuously absent from the announcement for any of the subsequent films announced, be it the regular chapter entries or the spin-offs. Rian Johnson is taking the helm of Episode VIII and was widely speculated to be directing Episode IX as well given that he's also been announced as that film's writer. However, according to Latino Review , the Disney higher-ups are so pleased with what they’ve seen of The Force Awakens that Abrams is now their first choice to direct the ninth episode of the saga.
